This interactive tutorial teaches about different types of energy transformations and includes practice and final tests to assess understanding. Topics covered include chemical, mechanical, electrical, electromagnetic, nuclear, and thermal energy. This program helps students understand how energy is converted and transferred in various scenarios.

Tutorial: Overview • Welcome! You will be learning how to use the “Energy Transformation” program today. • This is the part of the program that will explain exactly how it works and what you will be doing. • On each of the remaining slides, please click the arrow to continue.
Tutorial: Overview • This tutorial is broken up into 3 sections. • The first section is a review of energy transformations, just in case you need a reminder of the vocabulary or information we have gone over in class. • The second section is all about the Practice Test you will be taking. • The third section is all about the Final Test you will be taking.
Tutorial: Overview • On the next page, the review of Energy Transformations will begin. • If you have any questions as you are going through this tutorial, please ask the teacher for help.
Practice Tutorial: Review of Energy Transformations • If you wish to skip this section, you may do so by clicking on the “Practice” button below. • An energy transformation is when one type of energy is transferred to another, but is not created nor destroyed in the process. • EXAMPLE: A person eating a sandwich and then running (go to next page for explanation).
Tutorial: Review of Energy Transformations • EXAMPLE: • In order to run, we need energy. The only way to get that energy is by eating food. The food we eat stores chemical energy that is released when we run. Running is a type of mechanical energy. • Chemical energy = stored energy that is released when burned (like food). THIS IS THE ORIGINAL ENERGY SOURCE. • Mechanical energy = energy of moving parts (like running). THIS IS THE CONVERTED ENERGY SOURCE. Person running Person eating
Tutorial: Review of Energy Transformations • You now know what chemical and mechanical energy are. Here are some more types of energy: • Electrical energy: energy that creates electricity (when something is plugged in or static making your hair stand up). • Electromagnetic energy: energy that cannot be seen, but travels in waves (like light, sound and x-rays). • Nuclear energy: energy that comes from the nucleus of an atom either splitting apart of two nuclei joining together (like a nuclear power plant, a nuclear bomb, or the sun’s activity). • Thermal energy: energy that comes from heat (like heat from a fire or from the sun.
Tutorial: Review of Energy Transformations • Now that you have your basic definitions and an example to go by, we are going to move on to the directions for the Practice Test. • Please click on the “Practice” button to continue.
Tutorial: Practice Test • In order to get to the Practice Test, you will go back to the Home Page at the end of this tutorial. • You will then click on the “Practice Test” link that is underlined. • YOU MUST TAKE THE PRACTICE TEST BEFORE THE FINAL TEST!! • There are 10 questions on the practice test. • You will be given examples of energy transformations and you will have to figure out the following information for each: • The original energy source • The converted energy source • Click on each picture when you are finished to find out the correct answer before you move on to the next question. • You must take the practice test until you get 100% of the energy transformations correct. Once you finish, raise your hand and let your teacher know you are done. • You may take it as many times as you like before the Final Test. • Then, you may move on to the Final Test.
Tutorial: Final Test • In order to get to the Final Test, you will go back to the Home Page after you take the Practice Test and get 100%. • You will then click on the “Final Test” link that is underlined. • There are 10 questions you must answer. • You will be given examples of energy transformations and you will have to figure out the following information for each: • The original energy source • The converted energy source • Record your answers on the Final Test paper you were given and give the paper to the teacher when you finish. • You must get 9 out of 10 energy transformations correct (a score of 90%). • You will only get ONE CHANCE to take this test and get 90%, so take your time!
