Washington Scholarship Coalition What we collaborated to accomplish • Increase access to scholarships for Washington students, with emphasis around low-income and underserved students • Increase awareness of financial aid & scholarship opportunities • Increase private scholarship funding by providing donors with information on effective, efficient ways to contribute • Improve efficiencies in private scholarship application process • Improve availability of data on private scholarships for scholarship-seeking students • Create a trusted resource Washington Scholarship Coalition
The Case for theWashBoard.org Challenges that scholarship seekers face: Other tools don’t do the job • Most scholarship searching happens online • Many online tools overwhelm seekers with unreliable search results • Inundated with excessive marketing • Require lengthy profile submission, registration fees & other additional fees • Designed for “search” rather than “match” • Not student-centered • No feedback to scholarship providers to better align dollars with the actual needs of today’s students Washington Scholarship Coalition
The Case for theWashBoard.org Challenges that scholarship providers face • Lack of coordinated, cooperative efforts to help donors understand student needs • Lack of awareness & marketing of giving opportunities & processes • Some scholarship providers receive disproportionate & overwhelming number of applications • Washington has no centralized system in place to measure private scholarship giving – the landscape is not clear Washington Scholarship Coalition
The Case for theWashBoard.org The Challenge for Policymakers • Effective financial aid policy requires precise understanding of where there are gaps in other funding sources • Currently, no easy way for the public sector to see where private sector dollars are reaching or not reaching “Our state’s higher education investment can be an enduring stimulus for our future economy, but we need to re-examine how existing and planned higher education resources can be best organized to achieve that goal” - HECB Executive Director Ann Daley Washington Scholarship Coalition
