When do chemical changes occur? • Everyday! • You may not know it,but chemical changes happen all around us!
What are some examples? • Some examples of them include: • Cooking an egg • Or baking a cake
More examples... • Spoiled milk...yes,it may seem gross but it is changing from a liquid to a solid. • A cut apple becoming brown (decaying)
...examples... • Fireworks ...are actually metal that explode with color into the air when heat is applied. • Leaves changing color....from green to yellow,red,then brown.
Changes • The changes don't always happen in familiar substances for instance: • Vapors of hydrogen chloride in a beaker and ammonia in a test tube form together to make a cloud of a new substance...ammonium chloride.
Continued • And to make water molecules H2O: • Two molecules of hydrogen come together with one molecule of oxygen to go from two different kinds of gases to one liquid...commonly known as water.

Combustion • A combustion reaction is when oxygen combines with another compound to form water and carbon dioxide. C10H8 + 12 O2 ---> 10 CO2 + 4 H2O
Synthesis • Synthesis: A synthesis reaction is when two or more simple compounds combine to form a more complicated one. These reactionscome in the general form of: • A + B ---> AB
Decomposition • Decomposition:a decomposition reaction is the opposite of a synthesis reaction- a complex molecule breaks down to make simpler ones. These reactions come in the general form: AB ---> A + B
Single Displacement • Single displacement: This is when one element trades places with another element in a compound. These reactions come in the general form of: • A + BC ---> AC + B
Double Displacement • Double displacement: This is when the anions and cations of two different molecules switch places, forming two entirely different compounds. These reactions are in the general form: • AB + CD ---> AD + CB
Acid-base • This is a special kind of double displacement reaction that takes place when an acid and base react with each other. The H+ ion in the acid reacts with the OH- ion in the base, causing the formation of water. Generally, the product of this reaction is some ionic salt and water: • HA + BOH ---> H2O + BA
