  2. What is the Cornell Alumni Federation? The primary organization representing Cornell alumni • Supports and strengthens the University • Involves and enriches alumni • Fosters life-long relationship with Cornell

  4. Our Mission • Provide guidance to constituent groups • Promote communication between the University and alumni • Encourage alumni participation • Identify, train, and nurture alumni leaders • Recognize outstanding alumni commitment and leadership

  5. CAF Programs and Services • Frank H.T. Rhodes Service Award • Cornell Visa Card • Cornell Alumni Magazine • CAF Travel Program • Cornell ePronet • CAF Grant Program

  6. CAF Grant Program Grants are awarded for projects that: • Build organization membership • Develop leadership • Promote the standing of Cornell in the community • Attract prospective students • Benefit the interests of both alumni and the University

  7. What is the Grant Committee Looking For? • Pilot projects which have the prospect of being continued • Collaborative efforts between alumni groups • Projects that support University and/or CAF priorities • Evidence that the CAF grant will make a difference • Commitment of funds from the organization • Sense that project can be sustained • One-time funding requests for on-going projects

  8. What is the Grant Committee Looking For? • Clearly stated goals • Goals of the proposed project are in line with the University's goals • Detailed budget • Realistic project • Project will serve a real need • Evidence that organization is functioning in a healthy way

Guidelines for Grant Requests • Be as specific as possible • Grants will be awarded of up to $5,000 each • Terms of the grant: • 85% paid approximately one month after notification • 15% paid upon receipt of final report • Final report should include: • What was learned • Successes and challenges • A completed financial report for the project

CHS Grants Awarded Cornell Hotel Society – Toronto Chapter • Subsidize cook-off to showcase Cornell University and the Hotel School Cornell Hotel Society – European Chapter • Subsidize the cost of the CHS European Chapter's 2001 annual meeting Cornell Hotel Society – New York City Chapter • To host a luncheon for students of the Vocational Foundation, a non-profit organization with a hospitality training program for inner-city youth

Other Grants Awarded Cornell Club of Greater Philadelphia • To increase membership via a link with the Cornell vs. Penn football game Cornell Black Alumni Association • Subsidize cost of ten minute film on CBAA’s history, accomplishments, and future goals Cornell Club of Wisconsin • Subsidize a Rock-n-Roll Evening designed to increase club membership

  12. Tax Primer for Volunteers • Expenses that can be deducted: • Expenses incidental to your volunteer work • Transportation expenses • Reasonable expenses for meals and lodging • Expenses incurred in operating personal property • Be sure to document!
