Get Ready for the Reading Week!!! There will be no Unit 5 Seminar and No Mid-term Exam.
Spend Unit 5 Reading SCHOLARLY articles about your topic!Use the Library Orientation tutorial.
“An abundance of information yields a poverty of attention.” -Herb Simon Google is fine in everyday life, but NOT for this class. You cannot access most of the CJ scholarly resources by using the Internet. I advise you to stay off the web. Please only use scholarly sources!
.COM websites are RARELY acceptable for scholarly research. Use the World Wide Web carefully, if at all!
Try the Great Resources from KU Campus! All your Government resources in one place, and CJ professor’s websites too!
Select Links to CJ Related Sites Browse by topic!
Try Other Useful Links - NCJRS National Criminal Justice Reference Service!
I like the Research link Directories, Survey Instruments, and Databases Directories supply lists and data about a CJ related subject. Journals Journals contain current scholar writing.
Narrowing Down Topics • The Terrorism Research Center http://www.terrorism.com/ • Professional Issues in Criminal Justice http://www.picj.org/default.aspx • The Crime Report http://thecrimereport.org/
Let us examine The Terrorism Research Center Article: Fixing Intel: A Blueprint for Making Intelligence Relevant in Afghanistan http://devnew.terrorism.com/sites/default/files/AfghanIntel_Flynn_Jan2010_code507_voices.pdf
Professional Issues in Criminal Justice Volume 2 Issue 1 http://www.picj.org/vol2_1.aspx • Fem Fatales: The Evolution and Significance of Female Involvement in Terrorist Networks and Suicide Bombing • A Homeland Security Model for Assessing US Domestic Threats • The Taliban, Al Qaeda, the Global Drug Trade, and Afghanistan as a Dominant Opium Source
Narrowing Down Topics for Your Major Project Gender Issues - This topic can be narrowed down to focus on Issues Women Experience in Prison.I am including a terrific link here that may help.http://media.pearsoncmg.com/ph/chet/chet_criminal_justice_1/assets/schmalleger/7cjt1305.pdfTechnology - This topic could be narrowed down to include computer hackers. I'm posting a link to an actual case that involved hacking into government web sites.http://www.cybercrime.gov/lyttlePlea.htmBorder Control and Terrorism - Reducing the fugitive alien population in the United States - http://www.ice.gov/pi/dro/nfop.htm
The Crime Report Read articles or find government resources and organizations! Like The Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers at http://www.atsa.com/
Articles for you at the The Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers !!! You can really use these resources!
Use Primary Sources Avoid using newspaper articles if they refer to actual studies. A witness could not take the stand and say he knows someone is guilty because he read about it in the newspaper. You should find the actual study if a newspaper article refers to a study.
What to really Avoid? • .COM websites. • Opinions that are NOT Expert • Anything written on a blog.
I hope you enjoy reading!!! During the Reading Week, do reach out to me with questions if you need help, and check the Webliography. TCiccarone@Kaplan.edu
