  1. The Epistle to the Ephesians Truth, Righteousness and Peace: Ephesians 6:14-15 • Ephesians 6:14 – “Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,” • stand – active imperative • maintaining our ground • and this is solid ground isn’t it! • who’s doing the standing? • All of the verbs to follow in verses 14 and 15 are aorist middle participle • The middle voice indicates the subject performing an action upon himself (reflexive action) or for his own benefit. • therefore – what’s it there for? • People’s N.T. - ‘The Roman soldier wore a girdle, breast-plate, shoes with iron nails, a helmet to protect his head, and carried a great shield on his left arm which was thrown in front of his body. His weapon was the sword. It was with the sword, not the spear as other nations, that the Romans conquered the world. And these represent parts of the Christian's spiritual armor.’ • What does it mean to gird your waist? 1 August 30, 2009 Bob Eckel

  2. The Epistle to the Ephesians Truth, Righteousness and Peace: Ephesians 6:14-15 • To fasten garments with a belt or girdle • Brad Maston – ‘This was obviously a key area to protect because it is among the softest areas of the body least protected by bone structure. Additionally, this belt would be the piece that held the armor together. It serves as a securing piece that held the whole thing in one unit.’ • And with truth! • and truth is so very important • More so than faith, hope, and love! • John 1:14 ‘And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.’ • John 8:32 ‘And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.’ • III John 3,4 ‘For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth [that is] in you, just as you walk in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.’ 2 August 30, 2009 Bob Eckel

  3. The Epistle to the Ephesians Truth, Righteousness and Peace: Ephesians 6:14-15 • and putting on or clothed with the breastplate or corselet • Consisting of two parts and protecting the body from the neck to the middle on both sides – heart and lungs. • of righteousness • Let’s define righteousness • equity, justification • Isaiah 59:17 ‘For He put on righteousness as a breastplate, And a helmet of salvation on His head; He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, And was clad with zeal as a cloak.’ • In I Thess 5:9 – ‘But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.’ • Why the difference in metaphors here? • Ephesians 6:15 “and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;” • shod – to under-bind or bind oneself • your feet implies the presence of sandals 3 August 30, 2009 Bob Eckel

  4. The Epistle to the Ephesians Truth, Righteousness and Peace: Ephesians 6:14-15 • What is this ‘preparation of the gospel of peace’? • Is this like studying for an exam? • How’s your cramming going? • Or is this Gal 2:20 truth in each of us? • ‘I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the [life] which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.’ • Are we not then prepared for everything including the gospel of peace? • peace – quietness, rest, set at one again • John 14:27 ‘Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.’ • Rom 10:15 ‘And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospelof peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!’ 4 August 30, 2009 Bob Eckel

  5. The Epistle to the Ephesians Truth, Righteousness and Peace: Ephesians 6:14-15 • Thus, this is more of a readiness! • And this is a promise of God • Phil 4:7 ‘and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.’ • Why do you think God has identified various aspects of his armor to be positioned on certain body regions, or is this at all relevant? 5 August 30, 2009 Bob Eckel
