City life vs. country • In the cities people would often attend parties, concerts, fairs, cruises, and shows • In the country popular entertainment included barn raising, qualting bees, weddings, ceilidhs (parties with Irish, or Scottish music, dancing, and stories), barn dances, and other diversions.
reading • More people could read at this times so reading became very popular, this included books, and magazines. • Books were often published in serial format so people would need to buy next weeks issue to follow the story.
sports • “blood sports” such as bear-baiting, and dog-and-bull fighting would be considered very strange and brutal today but were quite popular back then. • Swimming for fun also became very popular
games • With no TV's, radio, or other devices people would rely on games to pass the time, some popular games were: • Kissing his thumb- the player, hanging by his right arm from a pipe or beam, must lift his body in goal of kissing his thumb. • Pulling the leg- two players lay side by side on their backs with the head of one by the feet of the other; they hold each other by the forearms and raise the left leg 3 times the 4th time they catch each others leg and each tries to overturn the other.
