How I studied for Step 2 CK • Taken April 2010, scored 230 - 95
Step-2 is second • My experience applies for those taking step-2 after step-1 • some score well when taking step-2 first, most score better when taking step-1 • depends on how you do it, personally it was smoother
Materials • Keep all step-1 material close to you • Usmle world is essential, the most universal advice • Kaplan books for step-2 • First aid for step-1 and goljan for step-1 were very helpful • Kaplan Qbook, introductory
Time management • had a preliminary view of when to take the exam • started to study for one month, app. 3 hours a day through Qbook • scheduled the exam after 3 months • booked Usmle world for 3 months • Applies if you took step 1 at most 1-year before
effort management • I studied 1-2 hours in my work place, 4 hours when back home • took 3-4 weeks vacation right before the exam • atleast half a day week free, an hour or two outside your study place
UNDERSTAND • Knowing how the exam is, you have to be as integrated as the exam, try to understand the body as a whole not as separate systems • Everything is connected, spend time connecting all the dots • Spend an hour understanding one phrase is better than “7efz” 10 pages
at times it was an obsession to understand, goljan was helpful with that • it will be boring, but mcq’s still keep it interesting • It was a personal challenge, not just a way out, and mcq’s are fair afterall • you will never feel ready enough
Exam focus • Concepts, definitions, integration, main intervention strategies • simple form of step-1 plus more diseases and details • hard questions are those with step-1 focus, or rare diseases to be confused • psychiatry and ethics are tricky
Exam day • bring your passport, RECENT photo • SNACKS!! don’t forget your glucose! • The question pool is huge, try not to revise much in the last hours.. There is always something missing • breaks can be stressful, you won’t relax
In the first few blocks It was very hard, then easier, anxiety vs. manmade strategy? • long questions can be very simple, remember that! • Don’t spend time mourning one question or 5, don’t obsess.. the exam tests your mental toughness and time managment
