William Hartsfield 1890-1971 Served Atlanta longer than any other mayor (six terms) Hartsfield promoted the idea of racial equality (although Atlanta was segregated) Began political career on the Atlanta City Council Promoted building Atlanta’s aviation industry The Atlanta Airport is named in his honor
Ivan Allen • 1911-2003 • Served as mayor of Atlanta from 1962-1970 • He helped desegregate Atlanta by ordering segregated signs to be removed from City Hall • He ended rules banning blacks from becoming firemen and not allowing black police officers to arrest whites • Only politician from the South to speak publicly in favor of the Civil Rights Act • He worked to get professional sports teams to Atlanta
Atlanta Braves 1st major league professional sports team to be located in the South 1966-1st season in Atlanta (77 years in Boston and 13 years in Milwaukee) Ivan Allen, Jr. threw out first pitch at first game 1974-Hank Aaron set the record for the most homeruns (715)---(retired with 755) 1976 – purchased by Ted Turner to promote his “Superstation” (TBS) 1995-Braves finally won the World Series; the 1st major league team in Georgia to win a national title 1997 – Turner Field 2007- purchased by Liberty Media
Atlanta Falcons • 1965-Falcons joined the National Football League/1st pro football team in Atlanta • NorbHecker– first head coach • 1966-played their 1st game at Atlanta Stadium • 1998-1st time the Falcons reached the Super Bowl, but lost to Broncos • 1991 moved to Georgia Dome • Today the team is owned by Arthur Blank and Rich McKay of The Home Depot
Atlanta Hawks • NBA franchise • 1968-Hawks moved to Atlanta from St. Louis, Missouri • 1970 acquired Pete “Pistol Pete” Maravich in draft • 1977 - purchased by Ted Turner • 2004 – sold to Atlanta Spirit along with control of Philips Arena • The team has never won a major championship • Individual and team stats impressive
