Seminars for student success • “Culture(s) in the Classroom” with Peggy Lorah, D.Ed. (November 1st, 2013) • Themes: • Sorting individuals into categories • neglecting individualism (emphasizing hierarchy of races) • Self-advocacy and advocating for others • Research as a tool or as a weapon • Several students raised this issue • Setting up environment and expectations in the classroom (roles of faculty and students) • “Diversity is good” • Danger of a Single Story (ted talk)

AERA conference information • Bryan will send you a survey • Fill out the survey indicating your travel intentions • The conference is April 3- April 7 • Keep in mind UPAC requirements: • 1. PhD students enrolled in 601, 610, or 611 are not eligible • 2. Hotels: Four students per room of the same gender • 3. Our best strategy will be carpooling
