  7. PRINT PRESS operate @ 200º--press 90secs

  8. FILM LOADING ROOM #1 & EMERGENCY EYE WASH STATION

  9. CODED POWER • DOOR LOCKS CODE WILL BE GIVEN BY INSTRUCTOR CRANK SEVERAL TIMES-ENTER CODE-WAIT FOR CLICK SOUND AND/OR BLINKING GREEN LIGHT= OPEN

  10. TWO FAN SWITCHES: • COUNTDOWN FAN SWITCH TIMER IS IN THE BW LAB. Set for 2 hour period. • THE MAIN FAN SWITCH • IS IN THE UPSTAIRS LAB • SEE RED SWITCH • TO THE RIGHT OF • THE DOOR. • USE SAME BW • DARKROOM CODE • TO GAIN ACCESS • INSIDE DOOR.

  11. DARKROOM: FILM PROCESSING SINK AREA INCLUDES: D-76 DEV TMAX DEV STOP BATH FIXER HCA FILM WASH PHOTOFLO

  12. FILM PROCESSING CHEMICALS:D-76: stock solution (discarded after single use).TMAX: stock solution (discarded after single use).STOP (acetic acid): working solutionFIXER: working solutionHCA: working solution

  13. D-76 DEVELOPER • DILUTE 1 to 1 • 1 part D-76 • 1 part Water • (use pump to dispense D-76) • Temp critical • 68-75º • Colder water flows from 4 central faucets (marked #3-#6)

  14. FOR REGULAR FILM DEVELOPMENT • KODAK D-76 IS USED ONLY ONCE TO HAND DEVELOP FILM IN STEEL OR PLASTIC TANKS. • STUDENTS MIX D-76 WITH WATER AT THE RATIO OF 1 PART D-76 TO 1 PART WATER • THEN TOSS DOWN DRAIN AFTER SINGLE USE.

  15. FOR PUSH-PROCESSING! • KODAK TMAX IS USED ONLY ONCE TO HAND DEVELOP FILM IN STEEL OR PLASTIC TANKS. • STUDENTS MIX TMAX WITH WATER AT THE RATIO OF 1 PART TMAX TO 4 PARTS WATER • THEN TOSS DOWN DRAIN AFTER SINGLE USE.

  16. TMAX DEVELOPERfor push-processing • DILUTE 1 to 4 • 1 part TMAX • 4 parts Water • (use pump to dispense TMAX) • Temp critical • 68-75º • Colder water flows from 4 central faucets (marked #3-#6)

  17. Monitor Chemistry • When finished working, dispose of any chemical that YOU DILUTE from concentrate: D-76 and TMAX film developers DEKTOL paper developer HCA tray solution for prints • D-76 and TMAX are one-shot developers that cannot be reused. • Developers can be contaminated easily so be sure to rinse beakers before measuring.

  18. INDICATOR STOP BATH • RETURN STOP for FILM process to gallon film containers located in sink. • RETURN STOP for PAPER process to 5 gallon STOP container on shelf. • EXHAUSTED STOP STOP BATH that turns PURPLE in color is fully exhausted. The stop can be safely discarded as it is no longer acidic.

  19. VERIFYING THE FRESHNESS OF EACH CHEMICAL. • FRESH STOP IS YELLOW. • STOP THAT IS EXHAUSTED APPEARS PURPLE IN COLOR. • IT IS RE-USED UNTIL THIS DISCOLORIZATION OCCURS. Yellow/fresh Brown/ almost exhausted Purple/toss

  20. FIXER • NEVER pour FIXER down the drain, as used fixer pollutes the environment • RETURN FIXER for FILM process to gallon film containers located in sink. • RETURN FIXER for PAPER process to 10 gallon USED paper fixer container on shelf

  21. FIXER DISPOSAL • EXHAUSTED FIXER: use hypocheck to check for exhaustion--the white cloud! • FIXER DISPOSAL: pour into large containers for EXHAUSTED/ DEAD fixer

  22. VERIFYING THE FRESHNESS OF EACH CHEMICAL • FRESH FIXIS CLEAR AND ALWAYS LOOKS THE SAME EVEN WHEN IT IS EXHAUSTED. • 1 ounces of FIX MUST BE TESTED WITH 2-3 HYPOCHECK DROPS. • A WHITE PRECIPITATE FORMS INDICATING EXHAUSTED FIX • (image on next slide).

  23. FRESH FIX IS CLEAR AND ALWAYS LOOKS THE SAME EVEN WHEN IT IS EXHAUSTED.2 ounces of FIX MUST BE TESTED WITH 2-3 DROPS OF HYPOCHECK. • A WHITE PRECIPITATE FORMS INDICATING EXHAUSTED FIX.

  24. EXHAUSTED FIX IS DISPOSED OF IN A 5 GALLON CONTAINER & IS NOT TO BE TOSSED DOWN THE DRAIN. • WE MUST COLLECT IT IN OUR EXHAUSTED/DEAD FIX CONTAINERS SO THAT ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY MAY TREAT THE FIX.

  25. HCA • REUSE solution from one gallon containers for FILM. • DILUTE solution from concentrate for PRINT processing and discard after use. • HCA acquires a STRONG PINK COLOR upon exhaustion--when it can be discarded. • Hypo Clearing Agent facilitates removal of residual FIXER from the prints and film.

  26. 30 ounces • WORKING SOLUTION OF RAPID BATH • 25 OZ WATER • 5 OZ RAPID BATH • MEASURE FROM • PUMP BOTTLE MAKING 30 ounces OF HCA (hypoclear) SOLUTION for PRINTS

  27. FRESH HCA IS CLEAR. • HCA THAT IS EXHAUSTED APPEARS DARK PINK IN COLOR. • IT IS RE-USED UNTIL THIS DISCOLORIZATION OCCURS. Dark pink/toss Clear/fresh

  28. PLEASE REVIEW SPECIFICS FOR CHEMICAL FRESHNESS.D-76 IS USED ONLY ONCE TO DEVELOP. MIX IT WITH WATER AT THE RATIO OF 1 PART D-76 TO 1 PART WATER. TOSS AFTER USE.TMAX IS USED ONLY ONCE TO DEVELOP. MIX IT WITH WATER AT THE RATIO OF 1 PART TMAX TO 4 PARTS WATER. TOSS AFTER USE.STOP BATH THAT IS EXHAUSTED APPEARS PURPLE IN COLOR.REUSE STOP UNTIL THIS DISCOLORIZATION OCCURS.FIXER THAT IS EXHAUSTED FAILS THE HYPOCHECK TEST:TWO DROPS OF THE HYPOCHECK ADDED TO TWO OUNCES OF FIX WILL EITHER APPEAR CLEAR OR CAUSE A WHITE PRECIPITATE TO FORM. THE WHITE PRECIPITATE INDICATES AN EXHAUSTED FIX. FIXER IS RE-USED UNTIL IT FAILS THE HYPOCHECK TEST.HCA TURNS A DARK PINK COLOR WHEN EXHAUSTED.IT IS RE-USED UNTIL DISCOLORIZATION OCCURS.STOP AND HCA THAT IS EXHAUSTED CAN BE DISPOSED IN THE DRAIN. FIX MUST BE DISPOSED OF IN THE DEAD/EXHAUSTED FIX5 GALLON CONTAINER AT THE FAR END OF THE LAB.

  29. STOP FIX HCA: POUR FROM BOTTLE NO DILUTION INTO GRADUATES (20 oz for plastic reel tanks) (16 oz for steel reel tanks) SIGNS OF EXHAUSTED CHEMISTRY STOP=PURPLE FIX=WHITE PRECIPITATE forms from 2 DROPS HYPOCHECK HCA=STRONG PINK COLOR (a faint pink color is normal after use)

  30. GRADUATES (liquid measure) • STOP/FIX AND HCA GRADUATES LOOK LIKE THIS AND ARE FOUND ON TOP OF 2ND SINK BY PRINT CHEMISTRY

  31. GRADUATES (liquid measure) • PREWET AND DEVELOPER GRADUATES ARE KEPT BELOW 2ND SINK AND LOOK DIFFERENT THAN ONES USED FOR STOP FIX AND HCA

  32. DIGITAL THERMOMETER MONITOR TEMPERATURE VARIANCE OF 2 DEGREES BETWEEN ALL PROCESSING CHEMISTRY AVOID CROSS- CONTAMINATION ON/OFF switch for thermometer is located at base of unit, on right side

  33. COUNTDOWN TIMER PROCESSING TIMES DEPEND ON FILM USED AND TEMP NOTE TIMES FOR YOUR FILM ON THE CHARTS.

  34. YOUR INSTRUCTOR WILL DEMONSTRATE FILM PROCESSING

  35. FILM WASHERS 10-20 MINUTES IN WATER WASH—drop stainless film reel into washer (shorter wash times preferable during warmer months to prevent film swelling) use PHOTO-FLO after washing film

  36. FILM WASHERS 10-20 MINUTES IN WATER WASH (shorter wash times preferable during warmer months to prevent film swelling) use PHOTO-FLO after washing film

  37. PHOTO FLO • ONE GOOD SQUEEZE FROM PHOTOFLO BOTTLE INTO SMALL TRAY, HALF-FILLED WITH WATER • Or use specially marked film tank, located in sink

  38. FILM DRYING CABINET OPERATE ON MEDIUM HEAT SETTING 20 MIN. WAIT FOR FAN TO STOP BEFORE OPENING HANDLE ALL FILM WITH CARE

  39. PRINTING CHEMISTRY • USE THE SAME GRADUATES as shown before FOR PRINT CHEMISTRY PREPARATION • Decant 30 oz for each print processing tray. Prepare HCA, diluted 1:31 & Dektol, diluted 1:2. PRINT CHEMISTRY IS STORED IN LARGE TANKS ON SHELF UNIT DO NOT MIX PAPER AND FILM CHEMICALS

  40. DEKTOL: PRINT DEVELOPERis stored below the sink in labeled 1 gallon bottles • DILUTE • 1 PART DEKTOL • 2 PARTS WATER • FOR TOTAL 30 OZ

  41. WHITE LIGHT Used only if setting up or cleaning up • SAFELIGHT Used when printing (BW paper only)

  42. ENLARGER STATIONS • EACH STATION IS BORDERED TO PREVENT LIGHT SPILLS AS WELL AS A DEDICATED WORK AREA FOR EACH STUDENT.

  43. ENLARGER STATION DETAILS • EACH STATION HAS A TIMER TO CONTROL THE DURATION OF PROJECTED ENLARGER LIGHT ON THE PAPER Check ON/OFF switch at top right corner of unit.

  44. ENLARGER STATION DETAILS • EACH STATION HAS A POWER SUPPLY THAT MUST BE TURNED ON TO USE THE ENLARGER. • Unplug from wall when not in use.
