PowerPoint Presentations Make it work for you…
We’ll be looking at… • What is considered a good presentation? • Structure of a presentation • The added value of presentation software • Presentation design • Presentation preparation
Structure Title Slide Intro. Slide The aims/scope Body Slides Each slide makes a point Summary Slide Draws the threads together
This Title is Ever so Small • This is a bullet point • and so is this • but they are • so tightly bound • together • no-one can make sense • of it or read it • what do you think about the white space & • by the way you can • borrow my specs!
Anyone with RED/GREEN Colour Blindness? Or dyslexia? What do you know of: Serif fonts Sans serif fonts
The PowerPoint slides should complement the oral presentation, but keep the following in mind: • Too many slides passing across the screen very quickly will have little impact, or will irritate the audience. • Each slide should relate to what the presenter is currently discussing and be in the form of the main points. Bullet points are effective. • The language needs to be appropriate for the audience, but do try to avoid jargon, abbreviations and acronyms. • Too much information on a slide is difficult for an audience to assimilate, unless they stop listening to you!
A Very Important Slide • To animate is to add a special visual or sound effect to text or an object. • You can animate text, graphics, sounds, movies, charts, and other objects on your slides so that you can focus on important points, control the flow of information, and add interest to your presentation. • You can set up the way you want text or an object to appear on your slide — to fly in from the left, for example — and you can set text to appear by the letter, word, or paragraph. • You can also choose whether you want other text or objects to dim or change colour when you add a new element. Beware of text or slides passing too quickly or annoyingly across the screen! Did you manage to read any of that?
Good Presentations Example 1 • Are those that grab the audience’s attention • Are those that get the information across to the audience • Are those that get to the point and don’t waffle • Are well prepared and well rehearsed • Do not run over allocated time and keep to the agenda
Effective Presentation Example 3 message
The perfect presentation… • Create your story- beginning, middle & end • Clarity – what are the main points to get across? • Practice so you are comfortable with your content • Appropriate tools used to convey message • Effective/consistent design- appealing to the eye • Connect with your audience
And remember…Your slides are NOT your presentation Your slides are a focus for your presentation and add visual stimulus to your discussion. Use your slides wisely to focus interest on what you think is important.
