How You Can Become a Class 1 Hgv Driver A heavy good vehicle, or HGV, is a lorry or truck that weighs over 3500 kg. Due to its unusually heavyweight and handling characteristics, it requires special training to drive. The proof of this training is in the licensing, and all drivers wishing to drive an HGV must acquire HGV training to be eligible to drive this vehicle. HGV drivers are chiefly concerned with transporting items between clients and suppliers. Why should I be interested in a career as an HGV driver? In terms of employment; haulage, logistics, and transportation are some of the largest industries in the UK, with the fifth-largest chunk of employees in this sector. This means that if you undergo HGV Training and have an HGV licence in your hand, you are set for job security in an industry that is large, pays well, and shows no sign of decline for years to come. Additionally, it is a highly portable job, which means that you can move anywhere around the country, and still be able to find a job easily. If you have just completed your education, and are looking for a way to earn money, or if you have stagnated in your current industry, HGV driving is a great opportunity for a fresh start. While the process is strict and firm, it is relatively straightforward and can be completed in a month or so if you are determined. Then, all you have to do is pay the HGV Training fees, and you will be set.
How can I begin the process? While you could navigate the entire licencing process yourself, it is far far easier to have a specialist company do it for you. For a small charge, they will handle the nitty-gritty like your test booking, placement, and administration. They make the whole process far easier, but do charge for the luxury. Before you decide, take a moment to determine if it is worth it for you. You know what does make it worth it though? The salary! The mean salary for a class 1 HGV driver is about 28000 GBP per year, which is damn good money. Besides, the work-life balance is great, with mandated rules that you cannot be worked more than nine hours a day, or 56 hours a week. This means that for long haul jobs, where you may be driving a lot every day, you may get three day weekends every week! To make all this function, each lorry must have a tachograph, that record their speed, distance, and time travelled. So how can I obtain an HGV licence? Step 1. Get a car driving licence: There’s no way you can even begin the driving lessons for a lorry without having a car license, so get one of those. You will need to pass a computer theory test, and then go for a practical test, after passing which you will get your licence. Step 2. Apply for your provisional lorry licence: This permits you to start taking your lessons. First, you will have to fill up a form, and get doctors assessment. This certifies that you are in good enough health to drive, and will not be a danger to anyone else on the road. Once you have filled your application, you will have your provisional licence in three weeks. Step 3. Take the CPC test: This is a four-part theory test, called the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence. You will need to pass all four tests to get a CPC card, which will prove you are a legitimate driver. Step 4. Take the Cat E practical test: This will put you in the final category, of class 1 drivers. You will need to pass a practical test, after which the provision will be added to your licence. Congratulations! You are now a professional HGV driver! Welcome to a life of comfort, job security, and a great work/life balance! You are now in the good times. Enjoy, and drive safe.
