MRV & Reporting Status& Related Space Data Needs CAMBODIA SDCG-7 Sydney, Australia March 4th – 6th 2015
Scope and timeline for implementation • In Cambodia, the discussion on NFMS started in a form of discussion on database development. In the process of discussing the contents of the database for the storage of data related to MRV and WEB based database for information dissemination, role of NFMS has gradually been recognized by stakeholders. • On December 22, 2014, a Workshop was held to review the discussion on NFMS at MRV/REL Technical Team meetings and to clarify things to do for the design of NFMS of Cambodia. • While demarcation between SIS is still being discussed, relation between each component of NFMS will be summarized as a diagram on next slide. • . Space Data Needs Also, in the end of December 2014, a draft strategy for initial REL calculation was prepared. In making the draft strategy, the following conditions were considered: • Requirement of UNFCCC • Time of submission of REDD+ national strategy and REL • Available data • Available human resources SDCG-7 Sydney, Australia March 4th – 6th 2015
Space Data Needs In summary, the scope of this initial REL is: • Scale: National (Wall to Wall) • Activities considered: Deforestation • Carbon pool: AGB • GHG: In principle CO2 These scope is also applied to NFMS. SDCG-7 Sydney, Australia March 4th – 6th 2015
Space Data Needs But scope of NFMS should also include following factors. • Data collection cycle • Data collection method – by field survey or field survey in combination with satellite based survey • Type of data to be collected by NFMS and SIS SDCG-7 Sydney, Australia March 4th – 6th 2015
REDD+ activity data and satellite forest monitoring system Indicators 4.3: Web-based satellite monitoring system developed; monitoring system includes data on past and current forest cover changes 2014 Results: • Joint development of a land use and land use change map series by FA, UN-REDD, JICA and FFPRI • 2005/2006 map; completed • 2010 and 2013/2014 map; in progress • First version web-platform developed; Training conducted; Structure of web-platform agreed (Support by FAO). Next steps for 2015 • Completion of the land use and land use change series • Development of web-platform SDCG-7 Sydney, Australia March 4th – 6th 2015

Space Data Needs Required Space Data Types • Landsat 8 (wall to wall) and very high resolution satellite data (Rapid eye – for training data and validation) • Radar data to supporting on the NFI • Capacity building to improve current methodologies • Processing tools and/or software • How to intergrade map with inventory plot ? • The good quality of seasonal data mosaic. • Capacity building on time series change map. • LiDa data for monitoring on forest degradation, selecting cutting and Forest Biomass estimation • Spot data for monitoring on Forest Fire SDCG-7 Sydney, Australia March 4th – 6th 2015
Space Data Needs Current Challenges and Obstacles • Development of the National MRV System for the Cambodia • Refined methodology for land cover mapping • Integration of different data sources (resolutions, date of observation, optical and radar) to fill gaps in nationwide land cover mapping • Access to high-resolution images due to limited financial resources or data sharing issues SDCG-7 Sydney, Australia March 4th – 6th 2015
Space Data Needs Current Challenges and Obstacles • High cost of processing tools/software • Sustainable access to data and processing tools • Capacity building on Sentinel 2 processing data • Insufficient training on RADAR image processing • How to intergrade map with RS data • Coordination with international space agencies that provides free access to their satellite imageries/data SDCG-7 Sydney, Australia March 4th – 6th 2015
