2. Textiles Sector at a Glance India's textile and apparel industry is one of the mainstays of the Indian national economy. It is also one of the largest contributing sectors of India's exports worldwide. The Indian textile industry accounts for 14 percent of industrial production, which is 4 percent of GDP, employs 45 million people and accounts for nearly 11 percent share of the country’s total economy.

3. Technical textiles Technical textiles are textile materials and products used for their technical performance and functional properties. Depending on the product characteristics, functional requirements and end use, the highly diversified range of technical textiles is grouped into following 12 categories: 1) Agrotech 7) Meditech 2) Buildtech 8) Mobiletech 3) Clothtech 9) Oekotech 4) Geotech 10) Packtech 5) Hometech 11) Protech 6) Indutech 12) Sportech

4. Indian Technical textiles Industries Technical textiles has now emerged as one of the most innovative sectors with their ever-widening applications in view of growth of medical, agriculture, infrastructure, automotive sector, rising middle class, changing lifestyles, and low base of per capita consumption of technical textiles (1.7 kg, Global average is 10-12 kg). In India Technical Textile sector has witnessed a growth of 12.4% over the last five years and is expected to grow at a higher rate in the near future. This sector provides new opportunity to the Indian textile industry to have long term sustainable future. Despite achieving high growth rate, India caters to just 3% of the global technical textile market.

Standardization of technical textiles Based on the interaction with the industry and its association and Chairs of the technical committees and inputs from NITI aayog and Committee of Secretaries, more than 150 subjects pertaining to technical textiles, Composites and speciality fibers have been identified for urgent standardization. As an action point to the above meetings, BIS has constituted the following 4 new sectional committees: Sporttech Sectional Committee, TXD 37 Mobiletech Sectional Committee, TXD 38 Clothtech Sectional Committee, TXD 39 Composites & Speciality fibers Sectional Committee, TXD 40

Standardization of Protech(TXD 32 committee) • Protective Clothing Sectional Committee, TXD 32 - To formulate Indian Standards on textiles protective clothing for protection from fire and other health/life hazard • P - membership on ISO/TC 94/SC13 committee on ‘Protective clothing’ of ISO which has published 62 ISO standards mainly on test methods and few on products. • Important Indian standards published – • Bullet Resistant Jacket (IS 17051:2018) • Protective clothing and gloves for Fire fighter (IS 16890:2018 and IS 16874:2018) • Welder clothing (IS 16655:2017), • Protective clothing for industrial worker (IS 15748:2007) • FR curtain and drapes (IS 15741:2007) • FR Upholstery fabrics used for Non-domestic Furniture (IS 15768:2008) • High Visibility Clothing (IS 15809:2017)
