Introduction • An electroacoustic transducer that produces sound in response to an electrical audio signal input • Common loudspeaker uses a paper cone supporting a voice coil electromagnet acting on a permanent magnet
History • First origin of loudspeaker was by Johann Philipp Reis who installed an electric loudspeaker in his telephone in 1861 • Thomas Edison followed to use compressed air as an amplifying mechanism for his early cylinder phonographs
To translate an electrical signal into an audible sound, speakers contain an electromagnet – a metal coil • creating a magnetic field when an electric current flows through it. • This coil behaves much like a permanent magnet, with one particularly handy property: • reversing the direction of the current in the coil flips the poles of the magnet.
Examples of Loudspeakers • Tweeter • Mid-range Driver • Woofer • Subwoofer • Driver • Full-range Driver • Dynamic loudspeaker • Horns
