Open Source in Academia Advantages and Challenges of Open Source in the Classroom and Academic Libraries Presented by Matthew Butler 05/03/11
What is Open Source? • 10 criteria • Free redistribution • Source code available • Must permit source code modifications • May require that source code modifications be renamed • No person or group may be discriminated against. • No cause or endeavor may be discriminated against. • Original license distributed. • Must not be specific to one product. • Must not restrict other software. • Must be technology neutral.
Benefits of Open Source • Generally cheap or free • Most software is available for download for free • Little to no licensing restrictions • In most cases, can be installed on any number of computers • In most cases, source code can be heavily modified for users specific needs. • Access to source code allows users to modify the code to fit specific needs • Easily customizable • Cross-platform functionality
Limitations of Open Source • Not always as “polished” as proprietary • Quality ranges from “industrial strength” to amateurish • Support comes from the developer/user community almost exclusively • Security concerns due to the open nature of source code • Availability of source code can also identify vulnerabilities • Free does not really mean free • Installation and implementation costs can be higher
