Photoshop – Filters Computer Information Technology Section 7-9
Objectives The student will: • Know how to work with filters • Know how to use the filter gallery • Understand Smart Filters
Photoshop Filters • Filters allow you to apply artistic effects to images • Make images look like they were sketched with chalk, drawn with a graphic pen, have a texture, have a perspective added, etc.
Filter Basics • Filters are accessed through the Filter menu. • When you select certain filters the Filter Gallery opens up • Other filters open dialog boxes • Some don’t open anything • Filters are applied to the current layer • Some filters only work in RGB mode
Adding a Cloud Filter • Cloud Filters can be used to create interesting backgrounds • The Cloud Filter generates a cloud pattern using random values selected from the foreground and background colors. • To change the opacity of clouds you click on Edit>Fade Clouds
Using the Filter Gallery • Access the filter gallery from Filter>Filter Gallery… • The filter gallery allows you to: • Apply more than 1 filter to an image • Rearrange the order the filters are applied • Different effects. • Filter Gallery always applies the last used filters.
Using the Filter Gallery – Multiple Filters • Filters have different effects depending on the order in which they are applied. • Like layers you change the order by dragging the filter to where you want it to be. • If you don’t want the same selections as the previous filter, do NOT select the top Filter>Filter Gallery • Select Filter>Filter Gallery…
Smart Filters • Note that the filters applied were destructive. • The original image has been lost • Just like smart objects you can apply smart filters. • Before applying the filter click on Filter > Convert for Smart Filters. • Changes the layer to a smart object
Smart Filters • Once a smart filter is set it can be changed • Right Click on Filter Gallery and choose Edit Smart Filter • Blending options can also be applied to a smart filter by Edit Smart Filter Blending Options • Opacity
Summary • Filters allow the addition of special effects to layers • Adding filters is a destructive edit • Smart Filters allow for non-destructive edits • Vanishing Points allow for the addition of perspective into a layer
Rest of Today • Finish your Africa scene with smart objects and show it to me • 3 animals must be added to the image • Download ps1102 from the web site… • Add different smart filters to all 3 monsters • For 10 points extra creditrender clouds on the sky layer
