Starting points for redesign:UCL Corporate Strategy 2006-2012 Includes statements such as: ‘.. .Continuing to attract excellent students from around the world, without compromising UCL’s commitment to widening participation, and providing a research-led and student centred learning experience in a context of innovation and dynamism...’ ‘Facilitate student access to on-line services and a variety of information relevant to their studies (including e-learning elements of courses) via a student portal and commonly available and affordable wireless devices’ ’Create a single, focal location (along the lines of a “one stop shop”) for the delivery of services to students’

Returning to Ground Level Idea • Website Implementation: • CMS (Accessibility, Updatable, Better Structure, • Usability) • FAQ Database • News System • Improved Login (homepage) • Key Contacts Database / Web-> Email Forms • Database Driven A-Z
Project Overview (Phase 1) Content Development Design Site Map / Infrastructure Technical Development Graphical Design (Media Services, Reg. Web) Requirement Analysis Wireframe Design /Content Mapping Style Sheet Design Agree abstract design (ARO, Reg. Web) Bespoke Development (Php/MySql, Web Forms) Wireframe Level 2 Website Production CMS Templates (Web Services) Usability Testing (Students) Phase 2 Rollout of CMS content to Section Areas Live Website [Documentation &Training/Support]
Phase 1 – Dynamic Content Feedback Required • News/Events– Current Student focussed content • FAQ– Brainstorm from Registry staff over common questions. • Online Enquiries (*Not in 1st site revision, pending physical Student Help / Hub) -Who will manage the enquiries? What information do we request from users? -Online forms should be simple to fill in and notify the Helpdesk/Hub Desk person [Temporary Measure #1: Web to Email form – dropdown of key enquiry areas to dynamically post out to relevant section staff #2: Enquiry database to log everything] • Resources -On the Top right pane, a dynamically updateable list of key web links -Some of these links might be seasonal e.g. Graduation related etc.
CMS Homepage Design not present yet. Php development in progress. Silva CMS
Timescales & Resources • Aim to produce Phase 1 implementation by End of October (pending resources for content map*, design approval** (RMT), student testing*** (Oct), technical implementation*** completion) *TM currently **SM, Graphic Designer, RMT ***SM, some technical pending Web Services. • Phase 2 – TBA but I think: • Post October • Agreed with Section Heads • To schedule to fit in with availability of individual section areas • Priority goes to areas with the most frequent updates.
Supporting the CMS Process • Schedule Training and workshops (internal and via SDTU) • Scheduling appropriate time through next year to start to make use of the CMS. • Support from the Registry Web & IT Unit on specific areas. • Training/Workshop Area available away from Current Students area
Key Benefits Summarised: • ‘Findability’ of information from home page. (more links, some duplicated across sections) • Accessibility (Bar at bottom of page) • Ease of updates / Content more dynamic • Student focus / student centred • Better grouping of information • Use by students so add facilities they relate to e.g. Social Bookmarks, RSS • Design aids interest & readability
