Opportunities to Participate in Center for Research & Technology Development (CRTD) ActivitiesPresented at TCOB Meeting – March 1, 2012Michael Tinkleman, Ph.D.ASME Director, Research
The ASME Center for Research and Technology Development (CRTD) Established 1985 CRTD Roles • CRTD facilitates the collaboration between industry, government, and academia needed to address critical national and global issuesthat require mechanical engineering expertise. • Example: ASME Energy Grand Challenge Roadmap • CRTD supports research efforts that meet the needs identified by today’s mechanical engineering professionals. • Example: Gas Pipeline Safety Yield Strength Application Guide • CRTD helps to advance the technologies and processes that will ensure safe and sustainable development now and in the future. • Example: Sustainable Products & Processes Strategic Plan
CRTD Capabilities / Roles“What we are uniquely good at” • Ability to address ASME Enterprise level issues • Development of pre-competitive, collaborative research projects • Vision and roadmap workshops • Industry best practices • Peer and program reviews • Create ad-hoc Research Committees – Incubator role
CRTD Capabilities / Roles“What we are uniquely good at” • Ability to leverage existing CRTD Research Committee content into ASME.org content • Act as neutral party convenerto share knowledge and best practices • Provide the collective knowledge of ASME members to government and industry programs • Provide “home” for new research committees – e.g. “Jointed Structures Research Committee”
CRTD Research and Ad Hoc Committees(Over 400 Participants) / Research Areas include: • Gas Pipeline Safety • Peer Review Committee for Energy and Environment • Energy, Environment, and Waste • Mechanics of Jointed Structures • Nanomanufacturing Technology • Power Plant & Environmental Chemistry • Radiation (X-Ray) Technologies • Risk Technology • Sustainable Energy • Sustainable Products and Processes • Water & Steam in Thermal Systems • Water Management Technology • Ad Hoc Committee on BioEnergy
Potential Mapping of CRTD Research Committees to Technical Divisions
CRTDOpportunities for Collaboration Opportunity for a member of a Technical Division, Institute, or a Section to collaborate with CRTD to: • Join one of the 12 CRTD research committees • Create an ad-hoc CRTD research committee in their area of interest • Develop Collaboratively Sponsored Research Projects with Government & Industry Support, • Develop a Federal Government or Industry sponsored Workshop, • Develop an R&D Vision or an R&D Technology Roadmap in your area of Interest. • Assist in the implementation of one of the key project action items from the ASME Energy Grand Challenge Roadmap or the Water Management Technology Vision & Roadmap Workshop
Join a CRTD Research Committee(committees seeking members) • Energy, Environment, and Waste • Gas Pipeline Safety • Nanomanufacturing Technology • Risk Technology • Sustainable Energy • Sustainable Products and Processes (sustainable manufacturing) • Water Management Technology (industry experts)
New CRTDResearch Committee Projects • Energy, Environment, & Waste • Continuous Performance Monitoring for Waste to Energy Boilers • Fuel Delivery System Upgrades for Utility Boilers • Nanomanufacturing Technology • Industrial needs assessment workshop • Workshop for NSF • “Nanomanufacturing Enabled Value Creation for U.S. Competitiveness through Advanced Mechanical Science and Engineering” • Sustainable Energy • Innovative Sustainability Conference/Workshop
New CRTDResearch Committee Projects • Water Consensus Documents • Pre-commissioning of Co-Generation and Combined Cycle Power Plants • Heat Recovery Steam Generator Water Quality Guidelines • Produced Water for Enhanced Oil Recovery Steam Generating Systems • Jointed Structures Handbook
Opportunities to Participate in CRTD Activities Water Management Technology • Establish best management practices (BMP) for industrial non-potable water use. • Utility Municipal Waste Water BMP Workshop • Develop Industry-Specific Workshops to Promote and Capture BMPs in water reuse • Industrial Demineralization (desalination) BMP Workshop • Produce Industry Case Study Resource Guide • Define “10 Great Challenges” for Industrial Water Reuse • Identify Industries Best-Suited for Water Reuse • Evaluate water reuse and recycle efforts in industrial applications.
Opportunities to Participate in CRTD Activities Energy Grand Challenge Related • Increase ASME’s understanding, profile, and contributions regarding the energy-water nexus • Increase ASME’s profile in renewable and emerging technologies through new products and services • Strengthen alliances with other societies and international organizations to address energy issues and challenges
Opportunities to Participate in CRTD Activities Sustainable Products and Processes • Industrial Needs Assessment Workshop • Pre-Workshop survey working with ASME Marketing • Track Advance Manufacturing Partnership activities & opportunities • Create a sustainable product rating system • Develop methodologies and technologies for verification of performance with respect to sustainability metrics. • Define the critical factors that determine the sustainability of manufacturing processes.
CRTDSelect Publications and Products • ASME Energy Grand Challenge Roadmap* • ASME Water Management Technology Vision and Roadmap* • Sustainable Products & Processes Strategic Plan • ASME Water Management Technology Best Management Practices and Innovations for the Process Industries Workshop • Application Guide for Determining Yield Strength of In-Service Pipe by Evaluating Hardness • Steam Tables for Industrial Use • Consensus Document for Operating Practices for the Sampling and Monitoring of Feedwater and Boiler Water Chemistry in Modern Industrial Boilers *ASME Enterprise Level Projects
