  1. Investigating the Moon with the Lunar Mapping and Modeling Portal

  2. Objectives • Become familiar with the LMMP tools • Learn how to use the tools to investigate questions about the Moon

  3. Big Question Was the Aristarchus Plateau formed by a shield volcano?

  4. Hypotheses • If the Aristarchus Plateau was formed by a shield volcano, then we would expect to see evidence of many layers of lava • If the Aristarchus Plateau was formed by a shield volcano, then the shape of the plateau should resemble that of shield volcanoes on Earth

  5. If the Aristarchus Plateau was formed by a shield volcano, then we would expect to see evidence of many layers of lava

  6. If the Aristarchus Plateau was formed by a shield volcano, then the shape of the plateau would resemble that of shield volcanoes on Earth

  7. What data can we use?

  8. Possible datasets • Visible imagery (WAC mosaic) • Topography (LOLA DEM) • Chemistry (Clementine FeO and TiO2)

  9. lmmp.nasa.gov

  10. Browsing the Data

  11. Navigating to Aristarchus

  12. Zooming

  13. Adding Layers

  14. Adding Layers

  15. Adding Layers

  16. Adding Layers

  17. Adding Layers

  18. LOLA DEM

  19. Toggling between layers

  20. What features are seen on Aristarchus plateau? • Rilles • Craters of varying degrees of degradation • Pit craters

  21. What does the chemistry data tell us about the composition of the rocks in this area?

  22. Testing Our Hypotheses
