  1. TODAY’S OUTCOMES: SUN AND MOON ; HEAT - Review phases of the moon and the lunar calendar - Observe the properties of thermal conductors and insulators - Combine observations and geometry to develop a theory for the behavior for the moon

  2. 1 lunar month = 29.5 days 1 year = 365.25 days Some cultures use a lunar calendar, so that each month starts with a new moon. How many lunar months are there in a year? 365.25 / 29.5 = 12.38 lunar months in a year What does this mean? Most years have 12 lunar months, but sometimes a year has 13 lunar months. 13. Catherine thought the full moon was so pretty that she telephoned her boyfriend in Arizona to tell him about it. Can they watch the moon at the same time? [Hint: when does the full moon rise?] The phase of the moon is the same observed any place on the earth - however, the rise and set times of the moon differ from east to west. The full moon rises when the sun sets, so they could both see the full moon, but would have to wait until after sunset in both locations.

  3. Flash Website showing phases of the moon: http://astro.unl.edu/naap/lps/animations/lps.swf (Good way to study how the moon forms phases)

  4. TOPICS: TEMPERATURE (THERMAL ENERGY) Heat and temperature How does heat travel? Heat as a form of energy

  5. WHAT YOU ARE EXPECTED TO KNOW: - How sunlight makes the phases of moon as observed on earth - How to predict the phase of the moon on a particular day - How the angle between the moon and the sun changes with phase

  6. TODAY’S OUTCOMES: SUN AND MOON ; HEAT - Review phases of the moon and the lunar calendar ✓ - Observe the properties of thermal conductors and insulators - Combine observations and geometry to develop a theory for the behavior for the moon
