VLBI Facility report - Nov 2002 Tasso Tzioumis ATNF CSIRO
The LBA in brief • ATNF – Parkes, ATCA, Mopra, LBA-Correlator • UTas – Hobart, Ceduna • Tidbinbilla (NASA) -- limited access • Hartebeesthoek (S. Africa); – Kokee Park (USNO) • ++ adhoc others • Observations 5-10 days /term
LBA Proposals • Proposals – through ATNF ATAC -- (1-year lifetime) • ~ 6 new proposals /term e.g. 7 just received for next term • Overall oversubscription rate - ~2 • Schedule time on 5-6 proposals/term • Multi-term and Long term proposals e.g V131 (astrometry/imaging) - 5 year project! ~ 2-3 days/term
Observations • Observe at all AT-bands - 1.4, 1.6, 2.3, 4.8, 6.0, 6.7, 8.4, (12), 22 GHz • Recent 22 GHz observations - multiplexed observations of 4 lines - autocorrelations at Pa, Mp, Cd, Ho, Tid + ATCA data • New 22 GHz Rxs at Tid, Ho and Cd - very sensitive Tid Rx • Correlation progress still slow (people?)
People movements • Steven Tingay - ATCA Swinbourne • Richard Dodson - UTas Japan • Hayley Bignall (UAdel) JIVE • Tracy Getts – effectively left • Paul Jones – 6 months LBA correlator • Chris Phillips – Bolton fellow (technical) • LBA Support???
VSOP • NASA support ceased Feb 2002 (5 years) • Survey program continues - S2 recording + Canadian correlator - until Feb 2003 • Request for Mopra support through ATAC • LBA – Mp, Ho, (Hh) • Since Feb – 29 obs at Mp +1 in Dec • Since Aug – only 6 obs (+1) • Winding down?…
LBA Future • New technologies (Disk recording; fibres) - 1+ Gb/s rates (vs. 128 Mb/s now) • NTIV (New technologies in VLBI) meeting in Korea (5-8 Nov 2002) – 6 people from ATNF • LBA strategic plan? - open meeting(s) planned early 2003 - will report to next ATUC +(Steering Ctee?) • Plan LBA path for near future • Far future is SKA?
