Work for accessibility in Transport sector started at the beginning of 2000. • Every Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre) in Transport sector has a person in charge of accessibility. • The Finnish Transport Agency and ELY Centres have functional co-operation in enhancing accessibility The Delta Conference 2013 – 15 -18 September E. About 10 % of population are permanently disabled. • Many people are temporary disabled. • People are in different ways mobility-challenged on average 40 % of their lifetime.

Winter maintenance • The Finnish Transport Agency maintains the routes available for traffic and transport throughout the year. • The target is that on heavily trafficked roads and pedestrian and bicycle lanes the snow should not exceed 3 - 4 centimetres in depth (night time 8 cm). • Snow must be removed from the main roads within a couple of hours and from pedestrian and bicycle lanes within three to four hours after the snow fall. Observations • How you pass on the information concerning special maintenance places to the contractor (pedestrian crossings, hills)? • Politics - How much are you ready to pay for maintenance? • To plan the winter maintenance so that you can use machines (pedestrian crossings). • Bonus system is too low to encourage the contractors. Accessibility and road safety • Accessibility and road safety are both important goals of transport policy. • Much similarity between their operating methods. • Accessibility check should be an essential part of the road safety planning process. Conclusions • A lot of work has been done to promote accessibility. • The situation in the centres of towns is quite good in summertime. • How work together in the town and city centres (shop owners and road keepers). • Winter maintenance is a challenge.
