Hox Genes in Humans and Fruit Flies http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140673603141876/images?imageId=gr6&sectionType=red&hasDownloadImagesLink=true Hox genes are highly conserved over evolutionary time. In mammals, there are 39 Hox genes that are found in four, linked clusters.

  3. Hox Evolution • Drosophila has eight Hox genes, arranged in a single cluster. • Human beings have 39 HOX genes arranged in four clusters, each located on a different chromosome. • These probably arose from a single ancestral cluster like that in drosophila by duplication and divergence. • Vertebrate Hox groups 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are most similar to drosophila labial.
