Safeway-UCSFSmoking Cessation Program • 20 Safeway pharmacies • Rx for Change training program • Includes slideshows, lectures, videos, case studies, and role playing • Safeway pharmacists: "ask, advise, refer” • ASK customers if they smoke during routine prescription-filling • ADVISE smokers to quit • REFER smokers to information on medications, helplines, and non-prescription therapies in the pharmacy

Why It Matters • Smoking is the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality • 70% say that they have never been told to quit by a health professional • Pharmacists are one of the most accessible health care providers in their communities • Long-term established relationship with patients • Point-of-sale contact
