What is a black hole? A black hole is an object so compact that, within a certain distance of it, even the speed of light is not fast enough to escape.
How is a stellar black hole created? • A star with a mass much greater than the mass of our Sun may produce a black hole at the end of its life.
What evidence do we have for the existence of black holes? • Matter swirling around a black hole heats up and emits radiation that can be detected. • Stars and gas are swirling at high velocities around a central point. • Jets of x-ray radiation indicating that a star had been taken in to a black hole. • Odd patterns of the orbits of nearby objects. • Distortion of images of objects behind the black hole.
