Lunch Seminar Series Dr. Raija Kuisma, RS
Study of an Integrated Teaching Approach to Facilitate Active Learning of Clinical Principles and Integration of Knowledge in a Large Group of First Year Physiotherapy Students
Today’s Overview • What are the characteristics of the teaching / learning approach which contributed to students developing self-managed learning capabilities?
Background of the Project • The project aimed at developing and evaluating a course addressed to a large class of first-year students in order to establish the framework for practice in Physiotherapy as well as to develop knowledge and skills in physical assessment and exercise.
Objectives of the Project • To use peer- and self-assessment (PA, SA) as the main driving force for students’ self-directed learning. • To use various modes of teaching (WEB, CAI/CAL, laboratory and fieldwork sessions, classroom lectures and tutorials) to integrate the knowledge acquired in concurrent courses.
Objectives of the Project • To facilitate active learning processes by providing support for learning (chat lines, web forum, knowledge testing, online evaluation) • To provide an opportunity for the students to apply the principles of physiotherapy practice during field work session
Objectives of the Project • To evaluate the impact and/or outcomes of an integrated teaching approach and peer- and self-assessment in professional education • To examine the 2 challenges to professional education addressed by this project
The use of an ‘Integrated Teaching Approach’:An account of its development • Process of Development • Factors Affecting the Implementation Process • Impact of the Approach • Impact of Self and Peer Assessment • Lessons Learnt
Process of Development • Timeframe (Sept. 99 - Dec. 01) • Teaching Element • Research Element
Factors Affecting the Implementation Process • Student Attributes • Staff Attributes • Link Between Theory and Practice • Web Based Teaching and Learning • Logistics (e.g. Time, Practice)
Impact of the Approach • On Staff • On Students
Impact on Staff • Better teaching skills • Better use of session time • Better approach to teaching and learning
Impact on Students Development of Self-Managed Learning Skills • More confident and self-initiated • ‘Fitting’ into U life • Better learning of knowledge and skills • Skills development (critical, integration, presentation, questioning)
Impact of Self Assessment and Peer Assessment • Impact on Staff • Impact on Students • Impact on Teaching • Impact on Learning
Lessons Learnt • Course Design and Structure • Self and Peer Assessment • Inter-Tutor Consistency • Feedback about Student Performance
