Before he returned to his father in heaven, one of the last things Jesus said to his disciples was “Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News to everyone.” They didn’t do what he asked them straight away. After Jesus ascended to his father, the friends of Jesus went back to Jerusalem……..
Acts 2:1 – 18 It was now the time of the Feast, “the fiftieth Day” (Pentecost), when Jewish people remembered how Moses gave them God’s Law on Mount Sinai. The friends of Jesus were all together in the house where they were staying. Then it happened. Suddenly, as if a storm of wind and fire burst upon them, they were all filled with God’s own power and they began to talk in many strange ways. God gave them the power to speak out boldly.
Jewish pilgrims from lands all over the world were staying in Jerusalem City; they were from Mesopotamia in the east, from the shores of the Black Sea in the north, from Egypt in the south, and even from Rome in the west. A great crowd gathered, talking excitedly; they were amazed and didn’t know what to think.
“Aren’t all these people Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own language?” Some said, “They’re all drunk.”
Peter stood up and the others with him. He shouted over the noise of the crowd. “Men of the South! Citizens of this city! This is something you all ought to know about – so listen to me. You’ve got it all wrong. These men aren’t drunk – after all, it’s only nine o’clock in the morning. What’s happened is something in your Scriptures. Do you remember these words? ‘In the days that are to be, I will give my spirit to everybody; Your people shall understand me Your old men shall dream dreams Your young men shall see visions Even to slaves I will give my Spirit.’”
