G/T Research Mission The High School Gifted and Talented Research courses empower students to contribute to the larger community by applying, creating, and evaluating knowledge in a specialized area of study.

Research Process • Study an area of interest by reading scholarly journals as would a professional researcher in the field of study. • Collaborate with a practicing professional in the field of study who serves as a project advisor or mentor. • Formulate an original research question to guide the primary research study. • Conduct primary research using the research designs and methodologies of practicing professionals in the field of study.
Research Process Outcomes • Write a college-level research-based paper that synthesizes knowledge of the research topic. • Develop a product that communicates the results of the research process. • Communicate the results of creative achievements to appropriate audiences through oral presentations, visual presentations, and writing.
Benefits of These College-Level Research Courses • Students gain experience conducting college-level research while in high school • Students apply advanced-level skills in writing, presentation, and research as would an undergraduate in college • Students have the opportunity to consume and produce knowledge. • Students demonstrate real world application and development of knowledge

Logistical Considerations: G/T Independent Research and G/T Intern Mentor Program Students must demonstrate: • Sustained interest and enthusiasm for chosen field of study • Commitment to the research process • Willingness to collaborate with G/T Resource Teacher and Project Mentor/Advisor.
Logistical Considerations: G/T Intern Mentor Program • Flexibility of schedule to accommodate extra-curricular activities and mentor placement • Availability of mentor in chosen field of interest • Ability to interact with adults in a professional environment • Reliable transportation and car insurance • Health Insurance
Application Process • Print an application for G/T Research Course of interest from my website. www.teacherweb.com/MD/AtholtonHighSchool/burns • Complete the application and obtain teacher recommendations. (Due date: Jan 17) • Sign up for an interview with Mrs. Burns located outside of the G/T office. • Register for Independent Research (#195M) or Intern/Mentor (#191M) • Get Mrs. Burns signature on the course selection sheet. • Attend the interview on the assigned day. • Students will receive a letter regarding the program after all interviews are complete.
