Who are we? • We are one of 18 Solid Waste Management Districts in the State. • We are a one-county District (Craighead). • We are responsible for the collection and disposal of all solid waste within our district. • We are also responsible for administering recycling grants within the district.

Recycling (continued) • The CCRSWMD “Kurby Blue Bag” Program • Curb Side collection by seven cities within the district. • Currently no curb side collection in the rural areas in county. • Collects: #1 & #2 Plastic, Clear Glass containers, Aluminum Cans, Tin Cans • Processing is by Abilities Unlimited, Inc.
Recycling (continued) • Abilities Unlimited, Inc. is our new partner in processing the “Blue Bag” recyclables. • They have just secured a new permanent location at 806 Burke St., Jonesboro, AR. • Abilities Unlimited is a non-profit workshop and training facility for the developmentally disabled providing employment and housing opportunities for clients.
Environmental Education • The District employs a part-time Environmental Education Coordinator. • Outreach Programs • Civic Groups • Neighbor Associations • Women’s Clubs • Public Schools • Etc.
Environmental Education • Within the Public School Systems: • Trained and Certified 86 Environmental Educators. • Equipped 21 schools with recycling bins, containers and trailers. • Have Four schools that have been certified “Environmental Schools”. • ARC awarded the District “Recycling Education Program of Year”.
Where do we go from here? • Expand the “Blue Bag” program to include • All grades of Plastic • All Colors of Glass • Paper and Cardboard • Replace the Blue Bags with Containers • At least two Community Drop-Off locations • County-wide curb side collection
Where do we go from here? (continued) • Establish additional markets/vendors for tire recycling program. • Add tire processing at the Legacy Landfill. • Expand the Tire District to include other neighboring counties.
Possible Future Recycling Opportunities • Compost & Mulch • Construction Debris (including asphalt shingles) • Styrofoam • “You Name It”!
