Premise of Pilates for better riding • Horse reflect human behavior • Non-verbal communication between horse and rider • Better posture = Better seat= Clearer aids
Hollow human - Hollow horse • How the rider uses her body will reflect in how the horse will use his!
What is Pilates? • Created by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 1900’s • Art of Contrology- strength, stretch with control • Not all Pilates is created equal
Why Pilates? • Fitness for dressage riders • Application of Pilates exercises directly to skills necessary for riders • Pilates can give you the “how” • Promotes correct posture • Better posture = better seat
How does Pilates work? By strengthening core and trunk muscles to create a balanced body! • Transversus abdominus • Multifidi • Gluteals, hip rotators, adductors • Mid and lower trapezius
Transversus Abdominus • Deepest abdominal muscle • Wraps around the spine • Keeps spine stable with co-contraction of the Multifidi • Essential for half-halts
Multifidi • Works in conjunction with Transversus abdominus • Stabilizes and lengthens spine • Essential for proper posture
Gluteals (for Pilates wrap) • Essential for keeping hip angle open • Affect seat bones • Along with outward rotators of the hip, conveys “forward” to the horse • Essential for posture
Mid and Lower Trapezius • Middle fibers • Pull shoulder blades together • Lower fibers • Pull shoulder blades down • Anchors shoulders into core
Good posture • Proper skeletal alignment enhances riding position
