TEST REQUIREMENTSfor a BASIC License 3 Screening Tests you must pass: - EYESIGHT: 20/50 vision - WRITTEN: 80% correct 40 out of 50 questions - HEALTHquestions: you must inform the examiner of health problems related to driving
ROAD TEST ELIGIBILTY • Minimum age: 17 years old • GDL permit holders under 21 years of age must have a minimum of 6 months supervised practice driving before the test • GDL permit holders, 21 or older must have a minimum of 3 months supervised practice driving
TEST VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS 5 Items You Need for the ROAD TEST: 1. vehicle w/valid inspection sticker 2. valid vehicle registration document 3. valid vehicle insurance ID card 4. valid permit 5. NJ licensed driver to accompany you
You MUST provide your own TEST vehicle • The vehicle may NOT have any obstructions/consoles that prevent the examiner from reaching the foot/parking brake • The licensed driver MUST remain in the vehicle with the applicant at all times • DO NOT move the vehicle, even in the road test line WITHOUT a licensed driver in the vehicle
Elements of the Road Test • The purpose of the road test is to make sure that the applicant understands the rules of the road and can drive safely • Driving skills that you may be tested on: - driving in reverse - parallel parking - sitting properly - stopping - starting the car - turning - following - steering properly - using the horn - intersections
Licensing • If you PASS the ROAD TEST: MVC will issue a: PROBATIONARY LICENSE your driving habits will be monitored for 2 years • PROBATIONARY DRIVER = anyone getting their license for the first time( Age is NOT a factor) • If you FAIL the road test: you have to wait 2 weeks to take the test again
Reasons for Vehicle Rejection • The vehicle may be the cause of your failure if the examiner considers it to be unsuitable or unsafe • Some common reasons for REJECTION: - improper of expired inspection sticker - no examiner access to foot brake - defects such as: poor brakes unsafe tires missing seatbelts vehicle interior unclean vehicle failed inspection
