What is health informatics? “Health Informatics is the effective management and use of information, in partnership with healthcare providers and patients, to support the provision of quality health care & to sustain health” (Shaw, 2011). “With such a pivotal role, it is likely that in the next century, the study of informatics will become as fundamental to the practice of medicine as anatomy has been to the last” (Coiera, xxi, 2004). Key Organizations in Canada Concepts in Health Informatics
Challenge of Health Informatics • Fuzzy knowledge (logic) • Standards of data • Privacy • Specialized clinical environments and professions • Usability • Workflow • Lack of a workforce • Lack of a common theory Concepts in Health Informatics
Theoretical lens • Sociotechnology is about looking the cultural and organizational aspects of information management (Whetton). • Berg, Arts & van der Lei (2003) state that we must look at the interrelation between the technology and the organization to be able to understand the system. • Early theories focused on a technocentric approach which emphasized the importance of technology. • If a system succeeded or failed, the technology was the sole reason. • Manytechnologies were succeeding in some areas and failing in others, thus it caused a switch in perspective. “…the ultimate usefulness of a system is determined by how well it fits the whole organizational structure and workflow, not just the specific tasks for which it was designed” (Coiera, 2004, pp.131). Sociotechnology in Health • *There is no ONE Sociotechnical approach • It is about a balance between the social and the technology and is thus different for each organization • Sociotechnology looks at the influence of: power, organization, culture, workflow, design and change management • Views information technology in health care as a social process and thus affects the process of health care • Generally takes the actor view of technology • Berg, Aarts & van der Lei (2003) state that “systems fail because they are build upon the wrong assumptions” (p.300). Discussion Concepts in Health Informatics
Final Notes Take Home Messages • Health informatics is a discipline and profession in its infancy. • Due to the infancy of the discipline there are still many challenges in effectively integrating health informatics. • Sociotechnology is a balance between the social & technical environments.
