  3. History • Founded in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London • Chartered by King James I • Founded so England to counterbalance other expanding European countries • Find a Northwest Passage to the Asia, and to find wealth and riches.

History cont. • Early colonists faced disease and hunger. • Most colonists were business men trying to get rich quick. • Starving Times- Period of starvation during the winter of 1609-1610 in which all but 60 of the original 500 colonists died. • In 1619 marked the beginning of the American Slave Trade.

Government • April 1619, start of Democracy, modelled after English parliament • 1st popularly elected legislature, House of Burgesses • Established by Governor George Yeardley • Only white men that owned a certain amount of land could vote for burgesses • July 30- August 3, 1619 was the first meeting of the 22-member assembly • Made laws mostly about tobacco and taxes • Met yearly to discuss colonial matters House of Burgesses-1619

  6. Economy • Headright System- • Began in 1618 as an attempt to solve labor shortages due to the advent of the tobacco economy. • Required large plots of land with many workers. • Between 1-1,000 acres of land were given to anyone willing to populate the colonies.

Economy cont. • •Virginia = Great Britain's most lucrative American colony • –exported more than ten million pounds of tobacco to England annually. • •The tobacco was England's gold. • –Growing tobacco saved Jamestown economy Theft of the colony's food or livestock also punishable by death. • • Virginia's economy remained throughout the entire seventeenth century far too one-dimensional • •solely based on tobacco • •Country suffered a period of starvation during the winter of 1609–1610 • •60 of 500 colonists died ! • •Trade with the local Powhatan • •Food in return of Indian prisoners

  8. Culture • Barely any women in this colony until 1608. Described as indispensable. • The man of the house was in charge and the women in charge if the man was absent. • First born son was favored. • It was very common for women to have between 10-12 children, even some cases of 20 plus.

Culture cont. • Law mandated Virginians to worship in the Anglican Church. • Church was supported by tax dollars. • Line between religious and civil authority was blurred. • Virginians were also not tolerant of non-Christian religions. • Primarily white women were the guardians of a family’s religious life.

  10. Population • By 1750 Jamestown’s population was 119,666.

Dealing With Native Americans • •Famine, disease and conflict with local Native American tribes in the first two years • •Led to the failure before the arrival of a new settlers and supplies in 1610. • •The newly arrived colonist ignored the Indians • ••1613- Pocahontas is captured and held prisoner by the colonists. • •She is converted to Christianity. • •The colonists planned to give Pocahontas back to her people in exchange for food. • •1614- On April 24, John Rolfe and Pocahontas are married. • •there is peace between the colonists and Indians.

The Powhatan Wars • First Powhatan War - After the English arrived in Virginia in 1607, they struggled to survive through terrible drought and cold winters. • •It led to a series of conflicts along the James River in the autumn of 1609. • •Powhatan ordered siege of the English fort which precipitated the so-called Starving Time • •In 1610, Lord de La Warr (new governor in Jamestown) who took great military action against the Indians and made military like changes to the settlement. • •Second Powhatan War: It began in 1644 • –The Second Anglo-Powhatan War began in 1644 because of the effort from both sides to stop the other from gaining power • –Indians defeated • •Led to Disease, disorganization and disposability • •The proved the notion that Indians and whites could not live together peaceably
