Chapter 2 Jamestown
New France • In 1534, France sent Jacques Cartier to North America to find an all-water route across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. • Cartier failed, but did claim the land we know today as Canada for France (it was named New France).
John Cabot • In 1497, John Cabot, an Italian living in England, sailed west to find a new route to Asia. • He landed in Newfoundland (Canada), but believed he landed in Asia. • Later, England would claim all of North America because of the flag planted by Cabot.
Settling Jamestown • In 1607, a group of merchants formed the London Company to start a money-making colony in Virginia. • When the 144 settlers reached Virginia, they settled on a swampy peninsula which they named Jamestown, after King James I.
Problems With Jamestown • However, this area would soon be swarming with malaria-carrying mosquitoes and was surrounded by a powerful Native American group. • Also, none of the Jamestown settlers knew about farming, nor were they willing to work hard at it.
John Smith • The Jamestown settlers tried trading with the Indians, but many of them preferred to let the settlers starve. • Hunger & disease began taking the lives of settlers. • In 1608, Captain John Smith took control & made every settler work for their food.
John Smith Captured • While scouting for food, Smith was captured by the Indians & brought to Chief Powhatan. • As Smith was about to be clubbed to death, Pocahontas (Chief Powhatan’s daughter) rescued him. • She then helped save Jamestown by bringing food & keeping peace with her people.
The Starving Time • The following winter was so bad that it was called the “Starving Time.” • Since Smith returned to England, the Indians refused to trade with settlers. They were now forced to eat dogs, rats & human corpses to survive. • By spring, Jamestown was saved when 3 English ships arrived with food, colonists & soldiers.
Pocahontas Captured • To end the threat of Indian attacks, the English kidnapped Pocahontas & held her hostage for 1 year. • During that time she learned English, adopted Christianity & made new friends, including John Rolfe.
Pocahontas Marries Rolfe • John Rolfe found a crop that could be raised in Virginia & sold in England – tobacco. • Rolfe then married Pocahontas. Their marriage brought peace between Jamestown’s settlers & the Indians.
