Mali • Mali: a West African empire founded by the Malinke people. • Sundiata: a leader of the Malinke whose empire reestablished the gold-salt trade and expanded trade routes. • Timbuktu: a city in Mali that was a center of trade and Islamic culture.
Mansa Musa • Mansa Musa “King Moses”: a king of Mali who came to power in 1307. • Mansa Musa’s pilgrimage was so impressive that he was able to bring more trade to Mali. • He also brought an architect and scholars who taught history, theology, and law.
Decline of Mali • Internal fighting weakened the empire and regions began to rebel. • Songhai: a West African people whose leaders created a great empire after 1400 • Berbers took Timbuktu in 1433, and bandits raided caravans and outposts in the south.
The Empire of Songhai • A strong leader brought centralized leadership and motivation to Songhai. • Askia Muhammad: a ruler of the Songhai Empire, who took power in 1493 • He took control of the salt mines and expanded Mali’s territory.
Askia Muhammad • He divided his empire into provinces and put a governor in charge of each province. • He also appointed directors of finance, agriculture, army, and navy. • Islam spread in his empire.
