Homework! • Read p. 281-283 and answer Recap questions #1-3 • Choose one primary and one secondary group you belong to • What is your role in the group? Give examples of norms and sanctions within that group. • How has this group influenced your values/ behaviour? • How have you influenced the beliefs/ behaviour of the group?
CONFLICT A STATE OF OPPOSITION, HOSTILITIES OR STRUGGLE CHARACTERIZED BY NEGATIVE FEELINGS (Can result in verbal or physical fights) With a partner, list examples of conflicts
COHESION A SENSE OF UNITY THAT OFTEN RESULTS FROM WORKING CLOSELY TOGETHER WITH OTHERS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS With a partner, determine the characteristics of a group that allow for cohesion (how would you know a group will work together before working with them?)

DEHUMANIZATION • A process by which people come to see each other no longer as human beings but as simple objects • Once we no longer view someone as human, it is easier to act with cruelty toward him/her • Occurs frequently in cities because they are large and overpopulated- people lose their sense of identity and begin to feel like one of the crowd

ANONYMITY • A sense that one is faceless and nameless • Tends to make people more likely to engage in conflict or at least tolerate it • We are less likely to help someone we don’t know • INTERNET!!!
DIFFUSION OF RESPONSIBILITY • If several people are present at an emergency, individuals tend not to feel that it is their responsibility to take any action to help • It is believed that ‘someone else will do it’
SANCTIONED VIOLENCE • Violence that is encouraged and goes unpunished, even though it would not be permitted outside the playing field or arena • Or is it?

HOMEWORK Read pages 324-326 and answer the following questions: 1. How are aggression and violence created, according to Anthropologists? 2. Does our culture teach people to act aggressively and violently? How? Can this behaviour be unlearned? If yes, how? 3. Would you rather live in a society in which there is no violence or aggression OR one which tolerates a certain level of violence/aggression in day-to-day life? 4. If a Tahitian boy was adopted into our culture at 10 years of age, how aggressive do you think he would be as an adult? What if he were adopted at age 2? What age might be a turning point in whether or not the culture influences him to change this aspect of his life?
