Controlled Variables • Variables that could change, but are not allowed to; also called constants. Factors that stays the same through all phases of an experiment. (also called controls.)
Data • Information gathered during an experiment.
Density • The amount of something in a particular space or area; the amount of matter in something that is shown by the relationship between its weight and size.
Dependent Variable • In an experimental investigation, what is observed and measured.
Experiment • Test under controlled conditions that is made to demonstrate a known truth, or examine the validity of a hypothesis.
Experimental Error • Mistakes or laws in the experiment due to human inaccuracies.
Hypothesis • Tentative explanation that accounts for a set of facts and can be tested by further investigation. Suggested solution to a problem.
Independent Variable • The variable that is changed or tested by the scientist; the thing that is different between experimental groups.
Inference • Drawing a conclusion based on data and observation.
Mass • Amount of matter in something; measured in grams.
