Academic & pastoral support Priority within College Learning & Teaching Strategy and College Plan Two specific aims: • Giving all students opportunities to review their academic progress and goals, with personalised guidance from a member of staff • Enabling resources to be targeted effectively towards those students whose needs are greatest at a particular time
Why should I meet my DoS? Getting maximum value from meetings between DoSs and their directees
What are DoS meetings for? • Discussing course choices & academic progress • Helping students feel they belong • Opportunity to improve communication, empathy & understanding between students and staff • Mentoring students on their academic journeys
How can we develop role of DoS as academic mentor? Encouraging students to reflect on: • Transitions in student journey • Development as independent learners • Graduate attributes & employability
What forms can DoS meetings take? • One-to-one • Group meetings • Within a year group • Across year groups
Two reasons why important • Requirements of UKBA, funding bodies etc • To provide additional support as soon as possible for students experiencing difficulties
UKBA attendance monitoring • Registry is introducing census points for Tier 4 students • Matriculation including confirmation of attendance as usual • Reporting in person to Registry at further census points – 2 for UG and 3 for PG • Guidance to be circulated shortly
How effective are our systems for early identification of students in difficulty and for effective targeting of resources? • Which indicators are monitored (e.g. tutorial attendance, coursework submission, failed assessments)? • Are there clear channels of communication amongst staff (e.g. SSOs, DoSs, course organisers, tutors)? • Is it clear who is responsible for contacting the student? • What happens if the student does not respond? • Would it be helpful to have pro-forma communications to send at different stages?
