  3. What Article 2 Means to Me To me, freedom from discrimination means freedom to live your life without being looked down upon because of the way you look, your interests, or where you are from. It means reaching your goals and fulfilling your dreams because of your own hard work, effort, and talents and not because of how others feel about the color of your skin, your gender, the way you talk, or the clothes you wear.

  4. What I think our World Would be like if Article 2 was Not a Human Right If Freedom from Discrimination was not a Human Right, our world would be extremely negative. No one would feel good about who they are or share and practice what they truly believe. Instead, everyone would be worried about looks and appearances rather than about true talents and what REALLY matters.

  5. My Explanation: I found political cartoons that portray discrimination. The one to the right is just plain silly!

  6. My Personal Story Although all human rights affect us personally, freedom from discrimination is a right that I feel very passionate about. During college, I met a woman who was discriminated against because of her gender. This personal act of discrimination happened when she was in college, working towards her undergraduate degree. She was a very intelligent woman and had the highest grade in her class. At the end of the year, an academic honor award was to be presented to the person who was at the top of the class. This woman was extremely excited, as she knew she was the one who would be receiving the award, but on the night that the award was to be presented, the professor gave the honor award to a man and not her. After asking the man why she hadn’t received the award, he explained that he did not believe a woman should win such an award and that he wanted it to go to a man.

Freedom From Discrimination is not Followed Everywhere… My Explanation: Through dosomething.org, I was able to uncover horrible truths about how women are being discriminated against around the world, just because of their gender. According to dosomething.org, women are often neglected of the basic HUMAN RIGHTS “Millions of women throughout the world live in conditions in which they are deprived of their basic human rights for no other reason than their gender.”

  8. My Explanation: According to planusa.org, women are often viewed as LESS important than men. I can’t believe males felt that women deserve to be beaten at times. Why do they get to decide? What makes them think that this is okay? I would feel horrible if I was not allowed to have an education just because of my gender. SHOCKING FACTS FROM planusa.org: In a survey for the 2011 Girl Report, 43% of boys agreed with the statement: "There are times when a woman deserves to be beaten.” In the same survey, 60% of children interviewed in India agreed that if resources are scarce, it’s better to educate a boy than a girl.  http://www.planusa.org/content2722638

How the Law Handles Discrimination According to the U.S. Employment Opportunity Commission, “The law forbids discrimination when it comes to any aspect of employment, including hiring, firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoff, training, fringe benefits, and any other term or condition of employment.” (http://www.eeoc.gov/laws/types/sex.cfm) My Opinion: We are lucky to have this law in the U.S., even though we still have a long way to go because sometimes people do not follow it!

  11. Gender Discrimination Court Case With the website, http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?court=US&vol=480&invol=616, I was able to research a court case called Johnson v. Transportation Agency (1987). This was a court case in the U.S. where a woman was not promoted simply because she was a woman! Johnson won and the court ruled that the Transportation Agency was unlawful for not promoting the woman because of her gender.
