National Library Action Plan • Report to the Government April 16 • Plan, plan, plan… • Talk, talk, talk… • The report will contain a suggested time table • Work, work, work…
Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive, But to be young was very heaven!--Oh! times, In which the meagre, stale, forbidding ways Of custom, law, and statute, took at once The attraction of a country in romance! William Wordsworth

A library is a collection of sources, resources, and services, and the structure in which it is housed; it is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, or a private individual. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library
Bibliotheken bauen : Tradition und Vision = Building for books / Susanne Bieri, Walther Fuchs [eds.]. - 2001. - ISBN: 3-7643-6429-7 http://libris.kb.se/bib/8315959 http://books.google.com/books?id=8vaYmayBGUEC
Three basic functions of storing the written word • Repository (Library): ”to supply the knowledge required to perform certain activities” • Archive: ”to stock all sorts of things for possible re-use which one assumes might be of importance one day” • Representation: ”the compiliation of written works as treasures of learning with the aim of preserving and presenting a partricular cultural identity”
Relation to time Archive Representation Library Past Present Future
”Wealthy Egyptians equipped themselves with all the literature they needed, taking with them a reference library comprising so-called funerary texts into the next world”
Harry Järv’s Vision for Libraries ”To have all the books you need – or might need – within your reach.”
Ranganathan’s Laws of Library Science (1931) • Books are for use • Every user his/her book • Every book it’s reader • Save the time of the reader • The library is a growing organism
This applies on infrastructure level as well… • Libraries are for use • Every user his/her library • Every library it’s user • Save the time of the user • Libraries are a organisms in an environment
Libraries may well exist outside of library institutions • Library institutions should facilitate the creation of good libraries… • …everywhere
”A scholar is just a library’s way of making another library.” Daniel C. Dennett
The aim for a library infrastructure is not ”One Big Library” but ”A Thousand Libraries”…
From the European Interoperability Framework http://ec.europa.eu/idabc/en/document/3473
Interoperability ”...if each of the interoperating partners adopts the same set of agreements for interoperability solutions, each of them can reap the benefits of a single solution that is developed once and fits the need of all.”
Good infrastructure = Healthy networks • Open standards • Open data • Open conversations
A good library infrastructure supports interoperability… • …between libraries • …between publishers • …between vendors • …between users • …between libraries and publishers • …between libraries and vendors • …between libraries and users • …between publishers and vendors • …between publishers and users • …between vendors and users • …between libraries and the world • …
