The Utica, NY Market • The City of Utica sits in Oneida East County, at the heart of the Mohawk Valley of Central New York State. Being at the epicenter of major commercial centers like Boston, Hartford, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, it is considered one of the socioeconomic hubs of the region. • The Mohawk Valley provides a strong economic structure for new and growing industries ranging from aviation to metals manufacturing, distribution, information technology, and even nanotechnology. • In just the past year, the community has benefited from tens of millions of dollars in new investments. Among the highlights: East Coast Olive Oil – which had considered leaving the area – chose instead to build a new facility in the Mohawk Valley, investing $16 million and retaining 120 jobs. Owl Wire built a $6 million wire-making plant in Boonville. Bartell Machinery undertook a $4.6 million plant expansion in the town of Lee. International Wire expanded into a former Oneida Limited knife plant in Sherrill, and Fisk Alloys, a New Jersey company, invested $3 million at the former Strandflex building in Whitestown. • Earlier economic development successes continue to bear fruit. The $60 million Family Dollar distribution center, with its 400 jobs, opened in 2006 and is now in full operation. The 350-employee Empire Aero Center won a crucial jet-maintenance contract with high-flying Jet Blue, and plans to continue adding employees for several years. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service is also proceeding with a 600-job expansion.
