What is an E-Passport? • An Electronic Passport is the same as a traditional passport with the addition of a smallRFID chip embedded in the cover. The chip will store: • The same data visually displayed on the data page of the passport, • A biometric identifier in the form of a digital image of the passport photograph, which will facilitate the use of face recognition technology at ports-of-entry, • Another biometric identifier in the form a finger print or iris image, • The unique RFID chip identification number,
European Regulations & Perspectives • E.U. made the decision in February 2005 to implement the E-Passports based on ICAO standards • 18 months later (August 2006) it will become mandatory for 25 member countries, containing face picture as biometric data • After another 18 months (Feb.2008) additional fingerprint data will become mandatory • Basic Access Control recommandation will be the rule for data confidentiality • Fingerprint biometrics are preferred, versus iris biometrics which will be optional (Germany)
