Les concepts • Reflexive verbs are used to describe actions that a subject does to itself, and are formed in this pattern: REFLEXIVE VERB = REFLEXIVE PRONOUN + VERB • List of Reflexive Verbs: • Se laver (les cheveux): to wash up; to wash one’s hair • S’habiller: to get dressed • Se réveiller: to wake up • Se lever: to get up • Se promener: to take a walk Se maquiller: to put on make-up • Se reposer: to rest Se peigner: to comb one’s hair • Se coucher: to go to bed Se brosser (les dents): to brush one’s teeth • Se dépêcher: to hurry, to hurry up Se taire: to be quiet • S’amuser: to have fun S’asseoir: to sit down • S’arrêter: to stop Se souvenir (de): to remember • S’excuser: to apologize Se raser: to shave

Tips on reflexive verbs • Reflexive pronouns represent the same person as the subject. • Ex. Éricse lave. (Éric is washing (himself).) • Reflexive pronouns come immediately before the verb. (Remember that me, te, and se become m’, t’, and s’ before a vowel sound.) • Se lever and se promenerare conjugated like acheter. • Je me lèveNousnouslevons • Je me promèneNousnouspromenons. • Se réveiller, se lever, and se promenerare all boot verbs • Se souvenir is conjugated like venir. • Je me souviens. Reflexive verbs – passé composé • Always use être! • Use the past participle of the verb! • Examples: • I (fem.) slept. = Je me suiscouchée. • I (masc.) got dressed. = Je me suishabillé. • You (masc. pl.) apologized. = Vousvousêtesexcusés. • She got up. = Elle s’estlevée.
