What is “Wind”? -Wind (Definition): is the flow of gases on a large scale. -On Earth: wind consists of the bulk movement of air. -In Outer Space: solar wind is the movement of gases or charged particles from the sun through space, while planetary wind is the out gassing of light chemical elements from a planet's atmosphere into space.
Causes Wind is caused by differences in pressure. When a difference in pressure exists, the air is accelerated from higher to lower pressure. On a rotating planet the air will be deflected by the Coriolis effect except exactly on the equator. Globally, the two major driving factors of large scale winds (the atmospheric circulation) are the differential heating between the equator and the poles (difference in absorption of solar energy leading to buoyancy forces) and the rotation of the planet.
Solar Wind The solar wind is a stream of charged particles—a plasma—ejected from the upper atmosphere of the sun at a rate of 400 kilometers per second (890,000 mph). It consists mostly of electrons and protons with energies of about 1 keV.
