4. Fire Safety Procedures When a fire alarm sounds: Feel the room door – if the door is hot, do not exit. Seal cracks around the door with a damp towel Go to the window and await rescue personnel If there is no smoke outside, open the window Attract attention with a bright colored object If there is smoke outside the window, open the window only enough to hand the object outside the window. Re-close the window, with the object outside, to prevent smoke from entering. If the door is cool Close the window(s) and slowly open the door Before you leave, determine the amount of smoke in the hall If there is severe smoke, place a wet cloth over your mouth and nostrils, stay close to the floor

5. Fire Safety Procedures Cont’d • Proceed to the NEAREST fire exit: • Walk quickly, but do not run • Use stairwells. Do not use elevators • If the lights are out, count the doors as you proceed to the exit. This way you will be able to return to your room, if need be. • Exit the building • Proceed to an area away from the buildings’ main entrance and parking area. • Await further instruction from emergency personnel or staff

Residence Halls – Fire Safety Regulations • Smoking is prohibited in all buildings on campus • Fire Safety equipment is located on all residence halls • All buildings have sprinkler systems • Fire drills and fire safety inspections occur at least once per semester during the fall and spring • Sanctions are associated with anyone found responsible for violating any fire safety related policy, including failure to evacuate or tampering with fire safety equipment

Residence Halls – Fire Safety Regulations PERMITTED: • Refrigerators (under 3 cubic feet) • Microwaves (under 1000 watts) • Small kitchen appliances (Apartments only) • Keurig Coffee Makers(or similar products) • Power Strips w/ surge protectors • Hair dryers • Irons • Fans NOT PERMITTED: • Toasters, Ovens, Sandwich makers, etc… • Grills, Skillets, Crockpots, Hot Plates, etc… • Coffee Pots, Tea Pots, etc… • Extension Cords • Halogen Lamps, Lamps with plastic covers • String Lights • Candles & Incense • Electric or Kerosene Heaters

11. Your Responsibilities as a Resident Assistant If conditions allow, assist in the evacuation of all students. a. Knock on residents’ doors as you are exiting and direct all students to stairwells, not elevators. b. Report anyone who did not exit the building to a professional staff person. c. The RA staff is to report directly to area as designated by your RD for further instructions. Do not attempt to fight the fire yourself. Use fire extinguishers only to clear an exit way. Proceed to the lobby area, and follow fire alarm procedures as designated by the Professional Staff or Campus Police.

12. Your Responsibilities as a Resident Assistant Assist in keeping residents clear from the main entrance and parking area so emergency personnel and equipment can respond. You are not permitted in the building while the alarm is activated unless specifically directed by the Professional staff or Campus Police. All Staff Members, regardless of whether they are the RA on duty, are expected to assist the RA and RD on duty during fire alarms.

13. What Your Residents Need to Know • At your first floor meetings and throughout the year it is your responsibility to inform your residents of fire safety policies, procedures and other information • Make sure your residents: • Leave all prohibited items at home • Identify potential fire hazards in their rooms • Refrain from tampering with their sprinklers or smoke detectors • Know where the nearest fire exit is from their room • Know the importance of leaving the building every time the fire alarm sounds • Know the gathering location for your building

Gathering Locations for Residence Halls • Century Hall – instruct students to walk down the path towards Hillside Hall • Hillside Hall – instruct students to walk down the path towards Overlook North • High Mountain West – instruct students to walk down to the amphitheater instruct students to walk to the handicap parking area towards Hillside • Heritage Hall – instruct students to walk to the area between the apartment buildings/stairs • Pioneer Hall – instruct students to walk to the area between the apartment buildings/stairs • Overlook North – instruct students to walk down the path towards Hillside • Overlook South – instruct students to walk down the path towards the Student Center • Matelson Hall – instruct students to walk towards the entrance of the Student Center • White Hall – instruct students to walk towards the back of Matelson Hall
