CALICE continues to grow CALICE currently 138 physicists, 24 institutes, 8 countries Four new institutes have joined since the summer • Seoul: digital HCAL front end electronics • U. Texas Arlington: GEMs for the digital HCAL • NICADD (N. Illinois): scintillating tiles for the digital HCAL • Dubna (two groups): RPCs for the digital HCAL There are potentially four new groups in addition • Boston, Chicago, Illinois: already informally working with Argonne on RPCs for the digital HCAL • FNAL: new approach, possibly also RPCs for the digital HCAL AFAIK, outside Asia, this leaves few non-CALICE groups • Europe: only Italian LCCAL (sci tile ECAL) • US: SLAC/Oregon (Si-W ECAL), Caltech (PbWO4 crystals) Paul Dauncey - CALICE News
CALICE scope increasing too New collaborators allow the project to expand • Silicon-tungsten still only ECAL option • Although there is pressure to merge with the Italian LCCAL scintillating tile/silicon ECAL group • Scintillating tiles still only analogue HCAL option • Regarded (externally, e.g. by DESY PRC) as baseline HCAL option • Fine-grained HCAL with digital readout; now several options • RPCs: large US and Russian effort • Small scintillating tiles: only NICADD • GEMs: only UTA Unfortunately, not all on the same schedule • New options starting from scratch; further behind • But desirable (and politicially necessary) to beam test all options • The schedule has changed; we need to handle this carefully Paul Dauncey - CALICE News
ECAL progress Silicon wafer production (Prague, Russia): 29 good wafers (out of 30) so far; 270 needed. Very front end chip (Orsay) with 18 channels, CR-RC shaper and multiplexer. Prototype back from fabrication Sept; currently under test. PCB to hold chips and silicon wafers under design, production in 2003. Tungsten plates (Russia) have thickness and density within tolerance. First carbon fibre mechanical structure (France) and insert; carbon fibre structure show good mechanical behaviour. ECAL still on schedule for early 2004 Paul Dauncey - CALICE News
Analogue HCAL progress Detailed study done of many combinations of scintillating tiles, wavelength-shifting fibres, mechanical coupling and photodetectors (DESY, Prague, Russia) • Example of tile-fibre geometry dependence; varies from ~9 to ~25 p.e./MIP Analogue HCAL ready by mid 2004 Paul Dauncey - CALICE News
Digital HCAL: RPCs, GEMs, SciTiles RPCs: glass resistive plates, anode pads outside gas gap SciTiles: hexagonal tiles, spray-painted white with WLS fibres GEMs: foil with 75mm holes above 11 cm2 pads RPCs ready by mid 2004, SciTiles by end 2004, GEMs by early 2005 (a few layers only) Paul Dauncey - CALICE News
HCAL readout electronics Analogue option • Front end electronics; three ASICs being considered • One is Orsay VFE chip as used for ECAL (with minor modifications) • Back-end electronics; no bid within collaboration yet • Use of UK back end electronics still being discussed • Choice of Orsay VFE chip would make this straightforward • Other options might not work with UK readout boards Digital options • Front end electronics; under development (France/Korea) • Simple Q-V “conditioner” circuit feeding FPGA directly • Could be used for any/all options (if pedestals and gains are uniform) • Back-end electronics; again, no bid yet • Reuse UK readout boards? Bypass ADCs so act as LVDS-VME interface • Leads to common DAQ system Paul Dauncey - CALICE News
Beam test status Beam test schedule is changed due to HCAL schedule • Our proposal said 6 months from ~Apr to Sep 2004 • Now, analogue and RPC options only available by mid 2004 • SciTile and GEM options need to be tested in 2005 Schedule is now 1 year, from mid 2004 to mid 2005 • Not necessarily continuous, not necessarily at one site Still no site decision! • CERN now less likely, given schedule change • FNAL setting up new beamlines in 2003 (if effort available) • Favoured option if available (especially if FNAL become collaborators) • Russians pressing hard for Protvino • They have said they will cover cost of beamline setup • But there are safety concerns Paul Dauncey - CALICE News
Implications for the UK How do we change our schedule? Several pressures • ECAL aims to still be ready by early 2004 • Need to be able to read it out on bench to check OK • May even go for ECAL-only beam test at DESY • Delay in approval has meant no RAL ID effort • Electronics original schedule had completion by Dec 2003 • Probably too tight now; need several extra months • PPRP will need explanation about schedule • If we slip, we have to explain why it is OK, given previous stance • We will also need to request funding for FY05/06 My proposal for this • Delay electronics schedule by three months to Mar 2004 • Expand into FY05/06 as “exploitation” only • Think of some way to convince PPRP this is not a big deal… Paul Dauncey - CALICE News
