ISAAC

1. ISAAC The Promised Child Galatians 4:28 “Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.”

2. Birth of Isaac Genesis 17:15-19 15 And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16 I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.” 17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, “Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” 18 And Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before you!” 19 God said, “No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.

3. Birth of Isaac Genesis 18: 9-15 9 They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.” 10 The Lord said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah.12 So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” 13 The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’14 Is anything too hard[d] for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” 15 But Sarah denied it,[e] saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.” Genesis 21:5-7 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 And Sarah said, “God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me.” 7 And she said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”

4. Birth of Isaac • Isaac was the first Man in the Bible , to be named by GOD before he was born • He was born to Abraham as God Promised • His Name Means “He Laughs” • Nothing is impossible for GOD Genesis 18: 4 “Is anything too hard for the Lord?...”

5. ObedienceofIsaac Genesis 22:5-9 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy[a] will go over there and worship and come again to you.” 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.

6. ObedienceofIsaac • Isaac did not resist his father • It was a test of Isaac’s Obedience • It was also a test of Isaac’s faith • Abraham taught Isaac to trust in GOD

7. Isaac meets Rebekah Genesis 24:62-67 62 Now Isaac had returned from Beer-lahai-roi and was dwelling in the Negeb. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, there were camels coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel 65 and said to the servant, “Who is that man, walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

8. Isaac meets Rebekah • God always wants the best for us • He has given the Holy Spirit to help us • We must rely on the Holy Spirit to be blessed • Isaac prayed and waited patiently till his blessing came • When we wait on the Holy Sprit we will be comforted Romans 8:26 “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”

9. Isaac In Gerar Genesis 26:1-5 Now there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Gerar to Abimelech king of the Philistines. 2 And the Lord appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land of which I shall tell you. 3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father. 4 I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, 5 because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”

10. Isaac In Gerar • God Re-establishes his covenant with Isaac • What God has promised us also is a Promise that belongs to our children/future generations • It is Important for us to remember the promises God gives us

11. Isaac In Gerar Genesis 26:6-11 6 So Isaac settled in Gerar. 7 When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” for he feared to say, “My wife,” thinking, “lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah,” because she was attractive in appearance. 8 When he had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac laughing with[a] Rebekah his wife. 9 So Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, she is your wife. How then could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, “Because I thought, ‘Lest I die because of her.’” 10 Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.” 11 So Abimelech warned all the people, saying, “Whoever touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”

12. Isaac In Gerar • God Protected Isaac and Rebekah • Where did Isaac get the Idea of lying? • It is Important for us to remember what example we are setting to our children • It is Important for us to remember people are watching us Hebrews 12:1 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,”

13. Isaac In Gerar Genesis 26:12-22 12 And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord blessed him, 13 and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy. 14 He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants, so that the Philistines envied him. 15 (Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father.) 16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.”17 So Isaac departed from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar and settled there. 18 And Isaac dug again the wells of water that had been dug in the days of Abraham his father, which the Philistines had stopped after the death of Abraham. And he gave them the names that his father had given them. 19 But when Isaac's servants dug in the valley and found there a well of spring water, 20 the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him. 21 Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that also, so he called its name Sitnah. 22 And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, saying, “For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”

14. Isaac In Gerar • God blessed Isaac Abundantly • People of Gerar were jealous and drove Isaac away • Isaac did not quarrel with the people over the wells he dug • It is Important to maintain peace with the people around us Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart    and lean not on your own understanding;”

15. Isaac In Beersheba Genesis 26:23-33 23 From there he went up to Beersheba. 24 And the Lord appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father. Fear not, for I am with you and will bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.” 25 So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord and pitched his tent there. And there Isaac's servants dug a well. 26 When Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army, 27 Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have sent me away from you?” 28 They said, “We see plainly that the Lord has been with you. So we said, let there be a sworn pact between us, between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the Lord.”30 So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31 In the morning they rose early and exchanged oaths. And Isaac sent them on their way, and they departed from him in peace. 32 That same day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well that they had dug and said to him, “We have found water.” 33 He called it Shibah;therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.

16. Isaac In Gerar • God reiterates and confirms the same promise he made again • Abhimelech’s false Justification “just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace” • Isaac’s reaction to Abhimelech • When people do wrong towards us we need to let GOD take control I Peter 3:16 “keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.”

17. Isaac and his Sons Genesis 25:21-28 21 And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. And the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived. 22 The children struggled together within her, and she said, “If it is thus, why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord. 23 And the Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.”24 When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau. 26 Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.27 When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents. 28 Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

18. Isaac and Rebekah • Isaac prays to GOD for his wife • GOD answers Isaacs prayer, he has two sons • GODs plan regarding his sons revealed to Rebekah • Esau and Jacob grow up differently

19. Isaac and Rebekah Genesis 27 • GOD’s plan • Isaac’s plan • Rebekah’s plan Philippians 2:2 “ then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.”

20. Isaac Faith in GOD Hebrews 11:20 “By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future.” Genesis 28:1-5 Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and directed him, “You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women. 2 Arise, go to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethuel your mother's father, and take as your wife from there one of the daughters of Laban your mother's brother. 3 God Almighty[a] bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples. 4 May he give the blessing of Abraham to you and to your offspring with you, that you may take possession of the land of your sojournings that God gave to Abraham!”5 Thus Isaac sent Jacob away…

21. Isaac Faith in GOD • Isaac was disappointed whit what happened • Isaac forgave Jacob for deceiving him and confirmed the blessing • He trusted in GOD and surrendered to the will of GOD • Isaac by faith saw the blessing of GOD in Jacob (Genesis 35:27-29) Isaiah 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts,    neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.For as the heavens are higher than the earth,    so are my ways higher than your ways    and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

22. Summary of Isaac’s Life Isaac is a Miracle child of GOD Isaac learned to Trust & Obey GOD from an early age Isaac was a peace-keeper avoided confrontation Isaac had faith in GOD Isaac trusted the sovereignty of GOD Lessons we can Learn from Isaac’s Life Patience always brings rewards Try to avoid confrontation in every aspect of our life Be in Oneness in every aspect of our lives Be sure of GOD’s promise in our life and the life of our children God keeps his promises in our life always – Trust GOD
