EGG TO CHICK Mrs. Pumphrey
What is inside an egg? • There is the yolk. The yolk is the yellow part of the egg. It is the food for the growing embryo (the chick). • There is the white of the egg. The while is the clear part inside the egg. It is water like. This protects the embryo. • At each end of the egg there is an air pocket. This pocket is there for the chick to take its first breath.
What is happening to the embryo on Day 3? • If you looked at the 3-day-old embryo chick through a magnifying glass, you would see… • The heart pumping blood through the blood vessels. • It has a head. The embryo has eyes but they are not opened yet. It looks like a fish. • There are blood vessels that carry blood and food from the yolk.
What is happening to the embryo on Day 6? • Blood vessels have grown longer. They cover almost the whole yolk. • The heart is continuing to beat. • It now has ears. • The beginning of wings are starting to form. • There are the beginning of legs starting to form.
What is happening to the embryo on Day 9? • The embryo is starting to look more like a chick than a fish. • It now has legs • The yolk is slowly going away because the embryo has been eating. • It also has a beak but it does not open. • The eye lids are forming covering the eye but the eyes do not open yet. • It does not have feather yet.
Day 9 continued • The wings are NOT fully developed yet. • The embryo is getting bigger. • The yolk is covered with more blood vessels.
What is happening to the embryo on Day 12? • The embryo has a special point (hard) on top of its beak called an Egg Tooth. It will help the chick to break the egg as it hatches. • The yolk is less because the embryo is getting bigger. • The embryo can open and close its eyes.
What is happening to the embryo on Day 15? • Only 6 days to go inside the egg. • The white of the egg (water) is very little. • The embryo now has feathers. • There is enough yolk left for six days. • It totally looks like a chick now.
What is happening to the embryo on Day 18? • There is very little yolk left. • The feet are much larger now. • The embryo’s feathers are longer. • The chick is getting ready to come out of the egg.
What is happening to the embryo on Day 21? • The chick pokes a hole in the shell with its sharp egg tooth. • Turns inside the egg and starts breaking a line in the shell. • The chick will peck thousands of times. • It finally will break the egg in two. • Exhausted after all the work it will take a rest. • The chick will be wet and will need to dry.
Days 21 continued • It will begin pecking and eating. • It will start a new life.
